Most people benefit from fish‑oil supplements, even if they eat fish occasionally. Check with your doctor first—some people have genetics that don’t respond well to higher omega‑3 intake, and whole fish may be a safer option for them. I prefer sardines as a food source because they’re inexpensive, portable, and very low in pollutants. Larger fish accumulate contaminants from eating many smaller fish. Fish‑oil supplements usually avoid this problem because they’re made from small fish and the refining process removes much of the unwanted material. Oxidation is the main issue with any fish oil. Liquid oil should always be refrigerated, and even capsules can benefit from cooler storage. I add a small amount of BHT when I open a new bottle to slow oxidation. These capsules are large and can be hard to swallow. At this price point, the oil isn’t refined enough to eliminate all fishy taste or odor, and some people may experience “fish‑oil burps.” As for skin or other benefits, results vary. If someone has been avoiding omega‑6 fats entirely, fish oil won’t fix that. Replacing saturated and hydrogenated fats with polyunsaturated fats is far more important. Seed oils—even refined ones—perform similarly to olive oil in well‑designed studies.
