I was looking for 'audition' range. they are for a gift so i am not sure what i am buying. will these be the same/similar?

No. The audition "range" is just four individual pencils, one each of the Natural, 602, Pearl and Matte as a "tester" pack. This is a dozen of the 602s.

Is this for 12 pencils of the same grade?

Yes. A set of 12 Blackwing 602 pencils contains 12 identical pencils . They are roughly a 2B pencil of very high quality.

Why does the photo show different grades when these are all just a single grade?

Those other answers are daft - it’s just to show the range of other palomino pencils available. Of course you can add different pressure, but that’s not what the image is showing. If you want a soft pencil with an extremely dark mark, the blackwing is what you’re after. The 602 is a more multi purpose pencil somewhere between a 2B and an HB. I have loads of pencils and find the 602 to be used more than the blackwing - the latter is very much a drawing pencil. (my all time favourite and general go to pencil is the Tombow Mono though).
