premium matcha at a premium price
This is the gold standard of matcha. It makes thirty mini bowls (chawan) of tea. So the bag itself is really small. When it comes to tea ceremonies there are two preparations: thin matcha (usucha) or a thicker brew (koicha). A very important note that the directions don't include is the importance of the temperature of the water. Water temperature should be between 158°F (70°C) – 176°F (80°C). If your tea tastes too bitter you're water was probably too hot. A whisk should be used to mix this, specifically a chasen. It's all very interesting and you can google the steps/directions for a tea ceremony. Tea masters in Japan study for years to perfect the ritual. So this tea is really pure and high quality to be at the level of a tea ceremony. Definitely more for the connoisseur and priced accordingly.

Low grade quality.. don't waste your money
To boast that this matcha tea powder is "Ceremonial" or high grade is a joke. It is at best for cooking or making desserts. This is low quality matcha powder you can pick up in any grocery or drugstore in Japan for around $7 USD or less for this size bag. The color is dull green and taste is bitter which is a dead giveaway of the quality. It is what is..It's just annoying when sellers try to over hype and then underdeliver. Hopefully this will assist some first time buyers looking for high grade matcha for traditional purposes to stay away from this one. Seller- you should really revise your sales pitch a little and just base it on what it actually is- Organic Matcha Tea powder for COOKING! Which if you are making green tea lattes with a lot of sugar and milk to mask the flavor, you should be fine.

This Ceremonial Grade Is A Stand-Alone Drink
I purchased the CEREMONIAL grade. So good I just purchased it again. Ceremonial Grade Is A Stand-Alone Drink, this is for making traditional Japanese Matcha. I wouldn't waste this for cooking or mixed drinks like Lattes and shakes. Personally I'd get Culinary Grade for those purposes. It's like buying an expensive fine wine and adding it to a stew. Yes, it's good, but you lose all the flavors and nuances that you paid for and that make it superior. Get the Culinary Grade if you want to add milk, sugar, syrups, fruit, ice cream, etc. or use in baked goods like muffins and cookies. And for those who complain that it's bitter....100% user error, you are using water that's too hot. Green tea does NOT require boiling water, it actually overcooks it...this is not Lipton tea. Use water that is 175F-190F, no hotter. EDITED 8/2025...I've learned a lot and tasted a lot of matcha in the two years since I left this review. I had to remove stars, this is not 5 star match by a long stretch. It is low end "ceremonial" grade, which nowadays is nonsense marketing BS, and NOTHING like the rating system used in Japan. This matcha is better than $7 culinary grade, but not by much. The second bag I purchased got dumped into a large container of matcha that is used for protein drinks....matcha I don't feel is fit to be consumed as traditional usucha, made with bowl and whisk. Life is too short to eat garbage food or drink bad coffee, wine...or matcha!
