Had potential
There are some good ideas in this movie - but the writing and pacing here are the real problem. There is no sense of a story arc, rather this is a pastiche of other films such as se7en, the exorcist etc. The sets and atmosphere are well done - but it just isn't structured or paced well enough to hold interest. The ending is particularly bad as it's devoid of suspense and overly long. Lots of potential - could do with a remake.

"..WELL MADE CREEPY THRILLER.."
New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) investigates a series of disturbing and unexplained crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest, schooled in the rites of exorcism, to combat the possessions that are terrorizing their city, Sarchie is a non believer in any form of supernatural evil but when it starts to mess with his own family things change, This is a really well made horror/thriller from start to finish, it keeps you pulled in with a great story that's well paced out with creepy imagery, mild gory violence and interesting developments as it unfolds into the crazy climax, this is not like your usual supernatural possession type of movie its not so over the top I think, it don't try to make you jump every 5 minutes with silly scares, its still creepy and terrifying in all the right places if you like that sort of thing, it makes it more interesting too that the story was based on real life characters and events, if you like a good possession horror and a good thriller I think you certainly get both, very entertaining and worth going back to, the effects are all well done, the cast is great, check this one out!Blu-ray picture is great quality.Special features include commentary and making of featurettes.Region Free ABC, 118-mins, 2014.

'HAS IT'S MOMENT'S'
'Eric Bana' plays NYPD Sergeant 'Ralph Sarchie' who becomes involved in an investigation into a string of crimesthat have little or no explanation.Things get so complex he turns to 'Father Mendoza' (Edgar Ramirez) who has been schooled in the practice ofExorcism, a skill he will indeed need.'Sarchie' begins to realize a link between former Soldiers who had served together during the Iraq War, he has tofind and stop 'Santino' (Sean Harris) who seems to be the central figure in occurrences.Things become personal for the Sergeant when his family are dragged into 'Santino's' frightening world.During the Iraq war after a fire-fight 'Santino' and colleagues had investigated a near-by tunnel, the evil that had beenfound, had followed them back to the U.S.The film has several unpleasant images along the way leading to the climax. One or two 'Jump' moments, though i wouldn't describe the film as scary, however, it does have it's moments.Features -* Deliver us from Demons* The two Sergeants* The Demon Detective* Director's Commentary* Illuminating Evil - Making* Deliver us from Evil

Oh so very good!
This film is based on cases that Ralph Sarchie experienced whilst working with the police. Ive read the book he wrote and saw the short series that was on tv for a while where he took on different cases of families plagued by paranormal events. The plot is around three men who encounter something whilst serving in the military, something they unwittingly bring home. Ralph Sarchie and his police partner start encountering seemingly random call outs that are bizarre to say the least. Sarchie begins to make the connection between them and is drawn into an ugly, terrifying battle to save those involved and the lives of his family.Along the way he learns that he has the gift of discernment, the ability to sense and identify the entities. He also learns that it is anything but a gift you would ask for!The real Ralph Sarchie is very much like the portrayal by Eric Banna, which was good to see.The film is scary for one very good reason. It actually IS based on reality. As hard as it can be to accept, that level of malevolence is out there and destroys peoples lives.Sarchie has now retired from the police force and dedicates his time to 'The Work', saving those who have been afflicted.

true story - or not?
I liked this film which had some quite scary moments in it and when I read it was based on Sgt. Sarchies case notes naturally believed it to be 'based on a true story but then at the end of the film the credits show the usual 'all characters are ficticious etc, etc' so what are we to believe or what exactly does the statement mean? Is it a true story or not? I can only assume that the story itself IS true and that the names of those involved were ALTERED to give them a degree of anonymity and boy, would they need it! I found the acting to be good, the screenplay itself brought something relatively new to the table.. Stars Edgar Ramirez, Eric Bana and the brilliant Sean Harris. I don't think it suitable for anyone under 17yrs of age though.
