In a perceptive tale of friendship and sports, this multicultural early reader shows how Sam's visiting Mexican cousin overcomes the language barrier by teaching soccer to his new friends. Review: Great read - My daughter enjoyed this book on soccer, probably her favorite sport. Review: A Great Read - I purchased this book to read to a group of elementary aged kids. They loved it. I enjoyed the story line and the multicultural characters. The book addresses many issues from moving to a new place, interacting with persons from different backgrounds, as well as learning new things. Differences are not bad, they add to our lifes' journey.

great book for beginning readers
I got this book along with several other step-4 books for my 6 year old son. He really enjoyed them especially since they seemed relevant to his life. He plays soccer and enjoyed reading the books and looking at the pictures. These books are well structured and provide kids with engaging stories at a level that pushes them to learn new words while also learning about social situations. I highly recommend these books to any beginning reader.

Uses the word “stupid”
This is a cute book about soccer (“no hands!” mentioned a few times), language, and different cultures. I had some nice conversations with my 2 year old about what it would feel like to not speak the language of others at school. The reason for the 4 stars is that the book does use the word “stupid” which I thought was an unnecessary choice by the author and I would prefer not to be in a book that I’m reading with my child.
