Helpful Concept, but the Layout Feels Too Bus
I really liked the main book, so I was excited to try the Daily Stock Journal. But the layout felt too busy and cluttered, which actually made me not want to write in it. I was expecting something clean and simpleโmore in line with the style of the book itself. The content is good, but the design made it harder for me to use consistently.

Clever Queries Induce Thoughtful Reflection
I scoured the internet this past winter in search of fresh new ways to approach my daily morning journal writing. Perhaps it's no accident (since I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos on Stoicism over this past year), that this Daily Stoic Journal format's turned out to be one of my top two go-to solutions for journaling in 2025! Each week is introduced with a thoughtful page of classic philosophical quotes that set the right tone of encouragement re: consciously sticking with this format: responding twice each day to a single, simple well-crafted query (once in the morning and then again in the evening), which fills about 2/3 of a page with morning and evening reflection on the day's query. The queries themselves are quite concise, each clearly crafted with considerable level of intention, time and forethought. Thus far (still in the first month of entries), this one-year experiment's already helping me make MUCH better use of the finite amount of time I've set aside daily journaling before I rise each morning. I'm enthused enough to stick with this for a full twelve month cycle because I can already see benefits coming from this "less is more" approach. My writing was getting into a repetitive rut and now, instead of filling 3 morning pages with rambling, stream of consciousness narration before I rise, I'm feeling quite refreshed by trying this fresh new approach for a year!

Focused and Fabulous
I've read Ryan Holiday's books on Stoicism and several of his articles on Medium. Those readings convinced me that journaling was an important part of living a life of continual living and building character. I did not think I needed to buy this journal to do so. Boy, was I wrong. My journaling was all over the place and filled with the same complaints over and over again while I got nowhere closer to what I wanted out of journaling. I've had this journal for about a week now, and what a difference it has made. Each day I now sit down in the morning with focused purpose, prompted by the book, and in just a few minutes make more progress in my personal growth and development of character than in those endless pages of aimless writing I used to do. I still keep a journal for free wanderings now and again, just for the fun of it, but this journal has made a huge difference in a short period of time. I'm sorry I waited so long. It is well organized, focused, encouraging, and extremely helpful. There is also room for evening reflections that allow me to see how focused I've been during the day and if I've made progress in my actions. That has been invaluable. Yes, it's called The Daily Stoic Journal, and it is centered on Stoic philosophy, but I don't see how it is limited in any way to Stoicism. It's a journal that helps put into practice the wisdom of the ages for living the best life possible, and helping to bring the best actions we are capable of doing into our life.

Update: 4 stars, not 2. (Buy this plus a moleskin!)
One year later, I'm changing my review from two stars to four stars. Here's why. My original review (retained below) was based on superficial stuff. But here's what matters: looking back at my journal entries over the past year, I am enormously thankful for the prompts from this book. I have explored more important ideas, more deeply, than in a lifetime of unprompted journaling. I've pulled a great deal of wisdom from my life experience, thanks to exploring ideas through the lens of stoicism. I do stand by my original advice, though. Bye this book for the prompts, but use your favorite blank book for your actual journaling. -----------original review------------ For anyone who follows The Daily Stoic or who simply wants Stoic ideas combined with thoughtful journaling prompts, the content here is fantastic. My problem is the book itself, printed on cheap, fibrous paper that's no good for journaling with most any pen I enjoy writing with (and since the cheap paper is so grey, pencil looks muddled in the page, too). Similarly, the thick hardback binding is the opposite of a lay-flat journal, which makes it hard to write in, and the constrained space for writing is only good for the briefest thoughts and tiniest handwriting. (Small thing, but it also bugs me that Ryan Holiday often describes this on his podcast as "a question in the morning and a question in the evening," when it is really one question per day.) The obvious solution is to do your journaling in your own favorite journal. There are so many other things this book could have been... ...a great journal with quality paper and more flexible writing space ....a much smaller book (just reflections and prompts without all the blank pages, with the expectation of BYO journal) ...a more interesting product that packages the prompts as physical bookmarks or stickers or something else you combine with your favorite journal ... Or even a digital product (a download, daily email or text prompts, etc)

A must have
A must have for me every year. The daily Morning and Evening Reflections, when paired with the Daily Stoic, can really help clear minds and bring some of the Stoic Teachings further into your mind.

Zen and the Art of Journal Maintenance
I bought โThe Daily Stoic Journalโ on a whim, thinking Iโd scribble a few thoughts here and there. Little did I know, this book would be like a philosophical gym for my brain! Each day throws a new stoic challenge, turning what I thought was a simple journal into a life coach dressed as an ancient philosopher. Before this journal, my deepest reflection was probably โShould I reheat this pizza?โ Now, Iโm pondering life, making decisions like a sage, and even impressing my cat with my newfound calm. Who needs years of therapy when youโve got 366 days of stoic wisdom? This isnโt just a book; itโs a journey. A journey that doesnโt require you to leave your favorite armchair. Perfect for anyone whoโs looking to upgrade their mental firmware with some age-old software. Highly recommended!

Excellent guide and journal for a personal exploration of Stoicism
I received my copy on the day it was released. I've been using the Daily Stoic, the hardback, Kindle, and email editions, as a daily reflection about life and living a life of meaning. This Daily Stoic Journal is a daily guided journaling practice of preparation and reflection for each day broken down into weekly themes. I haven't begun using it yet as a journal, though I have read through much of it now in anticipation of putting it into use. Each of the weeks in the year is introduced with the theme and relevant quotes to illustrate and support the theme. Each day is prompted with a thought within the theme for both daily preparation and reflection. My only negative criticisms of the journal are it's size, which limits the amount of space for writing, and it's binding which doesn't easily lay flat. The binding is of good quality; I just hope it holds up to a year of use. The paper and print is of good quality and Ryan's and Stephen's efforts in breaking down Stoicism into 52 practices or disciplines with all of the supporting content and prompts is to be commended.

Perfect gift
Wonderful journal with a number of different prompts worth reflecting over. This book is perfect to help form good journaling habits & keep you journaling for the year. I'm an essential skills instructor for a youth program where I've used a copy of my journal, along with YouTube videos of Ryan Holiday discussing his journaling, to promote healthy journaling habits for good mental health.

Daily friend
This diary has been my friend and companion over the past year, aiding me in aligning with a manifestation practice I discovered and deeply resonated with. It's been an intriguing exercise and experience to recite those words every morning, as well as to ponder the guided thoughts from Brian and Stephen throughout the day. If you're on a spiritual journey and seeking to connect with your core, I would definitely recommend it. Although the book is a bit too large and heavy for travel, its size is actually perfect for its intended use. Consequently, I've also acquired one for this year. ๐

Can't recommend this journal highly enough. Have gotten another one for the 2nd year and it's given me a short sharp morning practice that has greatly improved my mental clarity, discipline and state of mind.
