Is the lead strong and break resistance

The lead seems to be strong and long lasting, but any lead pushed beyond its limit will break.I bought my son a pack of these and he has not ask for any more in 4 months and still has a lot left.

refillable- Why is there such a controversy over the refillable ability of these pencils?

I haven't tried refilling them yet, but everything else with these pencils stinks... So considering they come with only 3 leads, I wouldn't be surprised if some people quickly encountered a hard time with the refilling, as well.

Can the plastic be recycled?

Not in conventional single stream recycle programs. But Bic has a program with Terracycle that does allow you to recycle them.
