Hi SophieFirstly let me say I'm no expert with Apple products. The blurb that it comes with says it will work with I pads and I phones so I can see no reason why it should not work with the I pad Air.If you are still concerned you could get in touch with the company who I found extremely helpful.CheersJem

I bought this... how do i change the touchpad so that it will work when I am holding the remote upright with one hand?

i don't quite understand the question. the keypad is blue tooth and so works like any laptop keypad with touchpad mouse. it should simply pair with your device and work which ever way up you have it and with as many or as few hands as are available. if it doesn't pair and work then i would send it back. hope this is of some help.
