Are they spongy Nerf balls you can use indoors?

They are softer than regular tennis balls, but you can put any ball that's tennis ball sized into it. Plus, you can pull back the top prime lever a little bit instead of all the way and shoot it with less power. It has a big rubber band in it that stretches when you pull back the lever. So when using in the house we only pull it back a bit

Does this shoot standard size tennis balls?

Regular tennis balls do NOT fit this. You have to buy their special smaller ones. They're saying "tennis balls" but that's false advertising and makes this a rip-off.

Has anyone switch adapted this for a special needs child?

I'd say leave the helmet on. It causes a pretty loud scream from our kids who aren't special needs. But no more barging into Dads' office when he's on a zoom call.
