A brilliant light in both senses of the word
The low-set keyhole of my front door mortice lock is in deep shadow in my porchway at night. I'd been meaning to put a light in for years, but getting an electrician or doing wiring yourself is such a hassle, for something small. Voila, white LED's solved my problem. I will, for about the third time in an Amazon review, draw people's attention to the three brilliant Japanese scientists whose work led to these gadgets and a well-deserved Nobel Prize. Credit is also due to the engineers who eventually made the white LED mass produceable and affordable. It's good to include the designers at Mr. Beams for praise too. This is a brilliant light (in both senses) and while a little expensive, it's much cheaper, again, than getting in an electrician. The light solves my problem with the keyhole perfectly, and indeed illuminates the whole (small) porch more than adequately. Be careful to place it, as I did, carefully so the shadow of your own body blocks the light as little as possible, if like me you are concerned about a particular feature such as a keyhole. However, the general feeling of cheer, to have a dark enclosed porch illuminated on your arrival, is also good in itself. The light does not seem to come on unnecessarily often ... my porch has no door of its own, and is about 15 feet from people passing on the pavement. Also, the light switches off quickly when nearby motion ceases, in particular when I close the door. The only small criticism: the supplied screws are not fantastic, so be prepared to have some better screws ready if you end up chewing the heads with a power screwdriver as I did. Or just be particularly careful. Very glad I bought this in time for winter. The instructions are good, and apart from the debatable screws, assembly and fitting is easy. The plastic is rather good quality and should be durable in an outdoor position, but protected from rain and the worst of winds, as in my case. I don't think it's intended for full outdoor use and am not sure it would be 100% waterproof ... but that's not the brief here, just letting people know. As noted in the product description, it doesn't come with batteries, and I am trying 4x C-cell "hybrid" NiMH rechargeables. If I get a chance, I will report on the battery life I get.

Good beam, easy to install, works perfectly
This is very simple to install - simply drill two holes, whack in your rawlpugs or spitz and off you go. I was worried about the weight from reading other reviews, but mine is fitted into a plaster board panel above my porch, and with the right fixings it's solid, no worries about it falling. At first I fitted in the centre of my porch, but it was being set off from the pavement 6 feet away, so I pushed it back towards the back of the porch so the sensor was partially covered by a bit of wall and now it only comes on when I step on to my path. It has a bright beam without being too much, and works every time. I'll see how the batteries last but so far I'm impressed. No more fumbling getting keys into my lock when I get home from the pub. :-)

Instructions are confusing - but the light is fantastic!
Bright enough for me to find things in my 8 x 6 foot shed:-) But it took me quite a while to re-assemble it because I found the re-assembly instructions rather difficult to understand. This is because both plates have the word TOP on one side, which I took to mean the sides with TOP on go at the top. But only the word TOP on the plate that you screw to the main body with a thumb screw does go at the top - whilst the word TOP on the plate that fixes to the wall/ceiling needs to be facing towards the light and NOT towards the ceiling as TOP suggests! Also, there are arrows on the sides of the casing that say UNLOCK < and > LOCK, but I finally worked out that they only apply to the plate that fixes to the wall or ceiling and NOT to the plate that screws directly on top of the main body with a plastic thumb screw. The light I received was also faulty as the circumference of the silicon or rubber seal was too long for the channel and looped out of it, no matter how many times I tried to press it back into the channel. So I had to return it for a replacement. Update 15 Oct 2018. The replacement I received in Oct/Nov 2014 is still going strong as you can see from the photo I took 10 minutes ago! Every time I open the shed door in low light conditions, the light still comes on and allows me to see everything in my shed. Fantastic. Will definitely buy another when it finally gives up the ghost.

Mr Beams MB980 Ceiling Light
I bought one of these ceiling lights back in November 2012 and it worked well for about six months. Then, I noticed that the light seemed to be on all the time. In fact, as soon as it switched off, it was switching itself on again immediately (as mentioned in a couple of the other reviews). I had no trouble getting a free replacement from the supplier (Palmer Riley) and again this worked fine for about six months, but then started to fail in the same way as the original. While the supplier couldn't comment on the expected life of a set of C batteries, they did indicate that this behaviour is likely when the battery voltage starts to drop. I therefore decided to install new batteries and now it's working properly again. So, as a guide, it would seem that a set of batteries will last about six months with, say, two to three minutes use per day. Incidentally, we have a Mr Beams stair light and this is still working well on the original set of batteries after over a year, despite being activated considerably more than the ceiling light. Anyway, I've crossed my fingers and bought another ceiling light for my daughter's garage. I'd say five stars for performance, minus one for battery life expectancy and resulting unit behaviour.

Brilliant lights
I've had one of these for years and recently needed light in a couple of new areas so immediately thought of the Mr. Beams light. They're nice and compact and very easy to setup. Along with the light you get a mounting plate, wall plugs and screws, but you don't get the batteries included. You'll need 4 x C batteries (chunky sized). The original Mr/ Beams I have is mounted in a small, understairs, cupboard and only comes on when we open the door, the batteries haven't been changed in the years we've had it! The new lights are going into a tall cupboard and into a new shed, with the day mostly dark during winter it's impossible to find anything in the shed at this time of year. I'm no DIY expert but even I managed to fit these without a problem. The sensor works brilliantly, activating the light as soon as motion is detected (in this case from the door movement). It quickly turns off when motion is no longer detected and the light doesn't come on when the room it already well lit. Great bit of kit, especially for those small spaces you're never going to fit an electrically wired light in.

An excellent convenience light.
A good light in every way for my purpose - as illumination over a front door to make finding your key much easier. It is fairly bright, only has a quite narrow beam (about 8 feet spread from a six foot height) and operates from a distance of about 20 feet. I have it fixed horizontally above the door. So far, the batteries have lasted well (about 2 months) and show no sign of running down. As I said, perfect for my purpose as a courtesy light (it's intended use) but, if you need a security light, go for something brighter.

Average
Good: - easy to mount - looks well built - comes with all you need (including screws and dowels) - uses 4 C batteries, so it should work for a long period of time without replacing the batteries - it works (i.e. it turns on when it detects motion and turns off after a while) - some people complained it doesn't work properly Cons: - too sensitive: it turns on in dim light - you can't tune anything; for example, I wanted to make it less sensitive - the light doesn't cover that much space Bottom line: for less than I paid for this one, I bought a set of 3 motion-activated LED lights from China; those are much better overall because you can set the sensitivity and duration, but unfortunately they use AAA batteries, so you have to replace them quite often. For the amount of money I paid I was expecting a great product; what I received is an average product.

Great Light for anywhere
This is the third battery wireless light like this I've bought. They are great for a place that is dark and electrical connection is difficult. I have one in an airing cupboard, one in the loft and this one I've bought for the cupboard under the stairs. They are easy to install as the backplate has ready drilled fixing holes and screws and rawlplugs are included. They can also be attached with double sided pads. The light it motion sensed. This can be as simple as opening the door or waving your hand in front of it. Once on it remains lit for 30 seconds without movement. It takes size C batteries but they last a long time, those in my airing cupboard haven't been changed for 18 months now and are still going strong. It's a bright light, simple, but very effective. .

Perfect for small closet
I bought this for a small hall closet I turned into a pantry about 4 ft wide and 3 feet deep. With the shelves and all the pantry items it gets a little dark and hard to see some items. It is a bit of a pain to turn on the ceiling lights around this pantry just to grab something out. I found this light installed it in less than 15 minutes and it works great. The light is bright - some may feel it is harsh as it is a focused cone of light (smooth reflector) but it does the trick it lights up once I open the pantry door and stays lit as long as I am moving around under the sensor. if I do happen to have the hall lights on it is bright enough that this light's sensor does not activate the light. It is easy to change the batteries in it when necessary just twist it of the base and change the batteries and put it back in.

Efficace
Merci.

Just buy this, you'll love it
Update 10/21/2014: All lights are still going strong after 5 more months. One is used constantly, and batteries are still good. We'll see how long they last under heavy use... Update 5/20/2014: I moved to a house that's over 100 years old and none of the closets have lights (heck, none of the bedrooms have lights). Anyway, the closets are very dark. I've purchased a few more of these now and have monitored the battery usage. When monitoring movement and not lit, it only uses 60uA or 1.44mAh per day. When the LED is on, it uses 360mA for 30 seconds (or longer if there's movement). As it's drawing 360mA when lit, alkaline batteries will be able to provide about 6000mAh. Alkaline batteries *can* provide 8000mAh, but only with a much lower load (around 25mA). In other words, for each 30 seconds the LED is on, it uses 3mAh of power, so it can be triggered 2,000 times on one set of good alkaline batteries. I've found that it gets triggered about 6 times a day or around 3 minutes total. That means that each day it uses 18mAh for the LED and 1.44mAh for the movement sensor for a total of 19.44mAh per day. What does all this mean? It means that a set of good alkaline batteries lasts (6000 / 19.44 = 308 days) or around 10 months. Some last longer as they're not used as often, but 10 months is about the average in our house. This is really good battery usage for such a bright light, and it is PLENTY bright. Hope this helps! Original review: My daughter's closet is dark so it's hard to see her clothes when getting ready for school before the sun comes up. I looked around at a few different models and this one stands out because of the low battery usage and bright light. It works perfect. Easily detects when she enters the closet, stays lit while looking for clothes, and turns off when she leaves. It's also bright enough to see everything and the spread of the light is wide enough to light the entire closet. Can't really say anything bad about it. And the price is great as well. You can't go wrong with this.
