Is this a nine cog derailer?

Nope 8only. I'm up grading to a 9speed, had hoped it would stretch to a 9 but it don't. Go for the M90 it's 9speed better looking but a bit more £££. Hope this is of some help. Baz

How do I know what size I need

I think the size in universal, it is the mounting bracket that is specific the bike make and model, however I still managed to mount the derailleur with the incorrect bracket and seems to work fine.
