Wil this start a completely flat battery 1.8L car? I read on another product that these machines can't do that - only boost.

Why do people who don't know bother to answer someone's question? It's pointless. Leave the charger connected to your flat battery for a while to trickle charge then try it. You won't start it from flat.

Up to what size engine will it start?

started a 2.4 diesel Transit after leaving connected to give battery chance to take a charge

Can this unit be left on charge until needed using a modern optimate charger which monitors battery condition to prevent over charging.

The manufactures recommend charging the unit to it full charge and then recharging at 2 monthly intervals. It will start most cars even if not fully charged. I have had mine only for a short time, I managed to start my neighbours car with ease using this unit. I don't think they are designed to be continually charged, but if you have some sort of charger that monitor the level of charge, I would wait till Monday then ring Sealey and ask the support department, they will tell you for sure. Seller?: my boat engine, a Yanmar 2GM deisel manual says needs a batt capacity of min 70 amp hours (my boat batt is 110). will this be good backup?

This battery box is essentially used to start engines when the engine starter battery is flat (discharged). It would not bne any good as a substitute battery.It is a small battery which is capable of delivering a big 'wallop' but then needs recharging.
