It is made of plastic. It has very good detail and is very sturdy. Bought it for our grandson who is nearly 3 and he loves it. We bought a motor for it to put it in the bath which is good but it is a little bit too big for the bath.

what age is this suitable for

Provided the child is supervised and beyond putting anything other than fingers food fork spoon and toothbrush in her mouth I would say from 2 and half . I think it is a toy with lasting value and would not be surprised to see year 6 - i.e. 12 year olds playing happily with it. There is good scope for language and fine motor skills development .

Does anyone know what the two little plastic squares are for? They have little wheels on it?

They pop into the bottom of the boat so you can wheel it around

Would this suit a 3 year old or should I go for the more basic Noah's ark 123?

Hi yes it would certainly suit a 3 yr old. The basic one is a bit baby for them. Our childminder has this and our little one has loved it since he was two so we got it for his 3rd birthday and plays with it regularly. He builds the trees and songs the song while counting on the animals. It's a great toy. Your little one will love it.
