It may seem expensive but is very very accurate
A good sensible buy, a little expensive but a very useful meter that can save you a lot of money in the longer term. This is the same product used by the company that does the motorhome and caravan annual habitation checks. It uses a 9v battery and also comes with a lead to make it easier to check hard to reach places such as rear walls above cupboards etc. One note though - to get a proper and accurate reading you are required to push the two SHARP prongs into the wall boards. Too much force or repeated use will leave you with very small pin head holes doted about. Unfortunately, the sharp probes are required to get an exact and accurate reading.

Fantastic product
I purchased a cheap damp meter (£20) for keeping an eye on my caravan. It was quite bulky in the hand and the prongs were quite fat leaving noticeable holes in the caravan walls. Also getting quite significantly different readings to my caravan service guy.He uses a protimeter and has owned it for the last 10 years. He showed me how easy it was to use with the light display on the front. Green good, orange keep an eye on, red is a problem sort straight away. There's also the handheld prongs on a wire for the places you can't get with the main device. Or you could do all readings with that and have the device handy facing you to read them with ease.Comes with a calibration strip. So you can check that the machine is working how it should be and spare prongs.Love the ease of the use of the machine. Love how thin the prongs are. Leaving a far less noticeable mark than the cheap machine I previously bought. Handy case to keep it all together. Highly recommend 12 months is a long time between caravan services. Should damp get in better to pick up on it and sort it earlier.

The product arrived very promptly and was easy to use - straight out of the box
The product arrived very promptly and was easy to use - straight out of the box. Taking time to read the instructions added the fine tuning!I like the idea of the calibration tool - a short length of exposed wire mounted in a plastic block - very reassuring to see that the meter readings are bang on target! This bit of kit does exactly what it says on the box and at a reasonable price. However, like all tools, it is important to know how use it properly - specifically to be aware of situations where wood of a normal moisture content can give falsely high readings. The meter measures the passage of electric current between its probes; if there is an unusually high chemical salt content in or on the substrate being tested, then more current will flow and the meter interprets this as damp. I know - I've been caught out!All in all, a purchase with which I'm pleased and can recommend.

Quality as always
I read a lot about these type of meters not being calibrated for anything other than wood, and so no good for testing damp in masonary. However, the documentation that comes with this meter states that they are calibrated for masonary amd take into account the factors generally mentioned in the negative reviews. These tools are used to detect the possibility of damp and do not claim to be fully conclusive. As with most tools, in the hands of a professional this is a great tool, but in the hands of an amateur, it can cause much confusion and possibly be misleading.

This does the job for an amateur like me. I'm fully aware that these gadgets can be dangerous in the wrong hands and I would not recommend this in place of getting a professional in, but it's certainly a big help in ascertaining if there is a damp problem in a brick wall. I really like the extra bit you can plug in so you use that instead to reach those awkward high up places. Actually I use that all the time now as it's easier. It's one step down from the one all the surveyors have which is about £400 and it does the job for me - I really like it and would definitely recommend it.

The only meter I use
Although imore expensive than other meters this is the one I have always used throughout my professional life. It is not a diagnositc tool for deciding whether the masonry of a wall is damp, it measures the conductivity in the plaster on the internal surface of a wall and most of the high readings obtained are due to contaminating salts which may or may not have arisen as a result of rising damp. A dangerous instrument in the wrong hands if the operator does not understand the basic physics of how it operates and how the results should be interpreted.
