i know this is meant to mount on the celing, can it be mounted on the side wall? as long as i watch the cable?

Yes. If you know its limitations. Thats how I mounted mine but I use it mainly to hoist my kayak to my garage ceiling. And mounting sideways is the only way to save space, and I used some pulley to direct the cable, but my kayak is light so theres that. Been using it for few years now.
