Very nice, but be careful not to fill too much . . .
This fryer is very nice, but do NOT overfill it. I filled it within three inches of the top and when I added French Fry cut potatoes, the oil bubbled instantly and overflowed the fryer. Fortunately it did not burst into flames but it was a moment of terror. There might be a max-fill mark, but I didn't see it or realize the potential problem. Otherwise, it's excellent in every respect and works wonderfully for French Fries. I was going to use it for fried chicken, but after watching Alton Brown's (Good Eats) YouTube video on fried chicken, it's my new method--except that I fry the chicken only for five minutes on each side to avoid burning the outer coating, and then I put the golden brown fried chicken on a metal baking tray with a "cookie" metal cooling rack and bake it in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 45 minutes to finish cooking the chicken. Amazon sells baking sheets with the 'cookie"cooling metal racks, and for home cooking this is the way to get golden brown fried chicken which is thoroughly cooked, yet juicy and tender. The Excelsteel frying pot is best for French Fries, tempura shrimp, and other food that needs to be deep-fried--just do not overfill it with oil, where two or three inches below the top of the frying basket is a good upper fill limit, so try it with a few French Fries and see how high the bubbles go).

Works Well
I bought this item to make homemade french fries. All you need to do is fill the fryer with oil, dice several potatoes and toss them in. In about an hour, you'll have the best french fries you've ever tasted. The basket is large enough to hold a lot of fries, and they come out great. The homemade fries made with this fryer taste better than any restaurant's fries. I NEVER add ketchup to the fries I cook in this fryer, as it would only drown out the great flavor they have. Side note: I only use olive oil when I deep-fry, as I've heard it does not clog one's arteries like most other cooking oils. Also, fries cooked in pure olive oil tend to taste better, as the potato slices absorb the olive flavor while cooking. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: There is a potential fire risk when cooking oil gets too hot. From what I've heard, olive oil is a somewhat greater fire risk than other cooking oils because it's "flash point" heat level is somewhat lower. The maximum heating level becomes even lower when the same olive oil has been re-used several times. Therefore, it is important to always dump out the olive oil after a few uses and replace it with fresh oil, and never keep your stove above a MEDIUM level. The fries will take some time to cook, but be patient. I assure you they're totally worth the wait!

Pot is excellent for frying foods, the basket however is not very good.
I purchased this for my husband because he wanted a pot rather than an electric fryer because the pot is more versatile and it's not taking up valuable real-estate in our very small apartment kitchen that a big electric machine would. I marked this down one star because of the basket. It does have an issue with the handle folding up when you try to flip the basket, you can read other reviews on ways people have dealt with it using clips and such. I bought this reading those reviews and knowing that the basket would be a bit to work with. For us that isn't a huge issue because hubby doesn't actually use the basket much and when he does he knows to be careful with the handle. The basket if sold by itself I think really would only get 1 star because of this handle issue. Otherwise the metal is all held together well and it is sturdy. It would be a great basket if they just fix the handle issue. The pot itself deserves 5 full stars, it heats up evenly and fries really well. It is the perfect size for a family of four while frying foods and can be used for other cooking projects when not being used for frying. Hubby is extremely pleased with this pot and recommends it as well. Clean up has been easy and the pot has been used a lot since we got it and it's still holding it's original shine and metallic color. The lid fits the pot, and all of the handles on the pot and lid are secure and sturdy. So basket 1 star, pot 5 stars...I didn't average it out giving this review lower stars because what I really ordered this for was the pot and I feel for the price the pot alone would have been worth the money we paid for it. The basket is just a really bad bonus item.

This does the job
I'm by no means a great cook. I've tried making fries many times, I've used an electric fryer, I've done them in the oven and I've fried them in oil in a shallow pan. This fryer, in conjunction with a good candy thermometer, yielded me my first truly authentic french fry. I like it because it's small enough to be dedicated (smaller than my electric, which I gave away) without taking up a bunch of space, and on my gas stove I have good control of the temp. I look forward to frying wings, fish, scotch eggs, etc in this little thing. It's perfect. A full jug of oil is just enough for the basket to be out of the oil when hanging on the side. And as far as the handle complaints, it's just a matter of not squeezing the 2 wires together when you dump, I had no issue whatsoever handling it with a full load. When you squeeze them together you "unlock" the handle, I can see how that might cause trouble if you're not paying attention, but I had zero instability whatsoever. Someone mentioned it will drip oil on the stove, the fix for that is to raise the basket and clip it in the raised position and let the oil drip out before dumping your food out, it all worked great for me. I might buy another so I can do batches of fish and batches of chips at the same time.

Great fryer.
Very good product. Worth its weight in gold. Easy to clean, use and store. Not technical at all.

No dump fryer basket
The pot is sturdy with some weight to it. The lid is adequate. The basket is sturdy. I looked specifically for a model that would seal after use so I could store my oil in the deep fryer itself without the bugs and dust contaminating the oil. This one has a nice fitting lid that does the job. The handle on the fryer basket even folds down so the lid will fit on with the basket still inside. However if you have visions of lifting this fryer basket out of the hot oil and dumping the food onto a plate, forget about it. As soon as you tip the basket the "convenient" folding handle folds on you and you have hot food, oil and 3rd degree burns all over your hand. That makes the basket completely useless. (and a liability) You STILL need a straining spoon to get the food out of the oil and onto a plate. This makes it easier to use WITHOUT the basket. Sure, I could find a dozen ways to fix this by working on it by digging out my tools and redesigning the product, but why? Its just as easy to buy one that is already designed properly. Also, there is no way to determine the temperature of the oil. Since not everything deep fried uses the same temperature, you will also need a hot oil thermometer. Without the fryer basket and a deep fryer thermometer all you really have is a pot with a lid. No different than any other pot. Since the fryer basket is useless anyhow, why not just buy a pot and a hot oil thermometer?

Value & Quality
This stove top deep fryer is a great value. I searched everywhere for a stovetop deep fryer that was INDUCTION rated, this one isn't advertised as compatible, but it works well with my induction top. Why wouldn't the seller mention this is beyond me... The unit is made of a reasonable gauge stainless steel and stores easily with the basket inside. Just what I was looking for, much better design than the name brand alternative cheaper too.

***DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM***
The size of this was perfect. When I started to use for the 5th time when it was about 40 % full of hot oil the PLASTIC HANDLE Broke off and hot oil went all over the asphalt about 10 feet from my house. If this hot oil had gotten on me I would have been severely burned. If this deep fryer was being used inside, it could have burned down the house. Why would they put a PLASTIC handle on something that gets hot over and over. This item is VERY DANGEROUS. DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE. I would have returned but i have had this 6 months but this was only the 5th time I had used it. DO NOT BUY!!!

The pot comes with its own strainer which is great when you are working with oil.
This pot was a little smaller than I wanted but I only deep fry chicken occasionally, so it will do fine.

Nice versatile pot
So far so good. I haven't really used for deep frying yet, still I love this pot. I like that it is not so big. The big thing for me is that it works with induction units. It is very versatile, as it can work for steaming, boiling or frying. The basket could have been designed better, but even so it works when frying or boiling things big enough that do not fall through the basket wires. The pot is not very wide which is very good for induction, as the magnetic area is similar to the pot's diameter. Any larger pots heat only in the middle...
