Too Small, but O.K. Otherwise
Ordered size 10.5 and they were too small. Surprised since I normally wear a 10 and ordered these half size larger and yet they still were too small. I returned to Amazon and reordered size 11 and just received...they seem to fit, but I'll need to wear for a couple weeks until final evaluation. Very easy to return to Amazon and I called vendor about sizing and they were helpful. Looks like a good shoe for hiking and plain old walking. It's been a few weeks now and overall I am happy with these shoes....good solid shoes that so far have been excellent in keeping my feet dry. They are heavy duty shoes with lots of stability. The only issue I have so far is that the design includes a rough spot on the inside of the show that rubs my upper foot. I wear a heavy sox and have to be careful to position the tongue of the shoe just right so the rough spot doesn't rub my foot.

slightly smaller toe box than previous version
Before I bought the Merrell Chameleon 5 Waterproof I had the Merrell Chameleon 3 waterproof. The Chameleon 3's were my all time favorite hiking shoes if conditions allowed a low cut.The Chameleon 5 is a very good shoe. PROs and CONs compared to the Chameleon 3PRO- the Chameleon 5 is lighter- Looks good- Not sure if the shoe is treated with something or if it is the material but the shoes stay clean. seems like dirt jumps off.CON- the Chameleon 5 sole is not as stiff and the toe is able to bend back to the laces with less stiffness.- It seems to be built on a different last than the previous iteration. In this version, the toe box is not as roomy and I get a slight pinch on top of my big toe when the sole flexes as you roll from the heel to toe.

Nice shoe, but a tight fit
Like other Merrell products, this seems to be a quality shoe. It is a little small and even though I ordered what I thought was a half size larger, it seemed to still fit tight. The tongue was really stiff as well and made it hard to fit my foot into. There is a spot at the top of the shoe where the shoelace threads through a ribbon that really locks the foot in. It forces the side of the shoe where the plastic heel support ends to rub against the foot in an odd way. I was able to unlace just that ribbon and the tongue and rub spot was much better. I'm in the process of breaking them in.

Retracting my original recommendation....
I don't normally revise my reviews but in this case, an update is warranted. In short, these shoes simply didn't hold up to normal, regular but relatively moderate use. In less than two years, stitching broke. And at right around the two year mark, one shoe has literally split at a key seam between the shoe and the sole. At the price point of these shoes, construction should be solid and the useful life should be longer. But neither turned out to be the case. So I bought a replacement pair from a different manufacturer and at a slightly lower price point. Hopefully I'll have better luck. In any case, there are too many other choices to be rolling the dice again with Merrell. After more than 5 years of regular wear my last pair of these shoes is semi-retired but only because it was time for a fresh look. I received the current pair as ordered and they fit as expected despite being a bit stiff right out of the box. They proved their worth with respect to water resistance again last night as I trudged along with the dog through inches of alternating steps of ice, snow, slush and water. While these shoes are a bit pricey, when I spread the cost out of the hours of wear and tear the cost compares favorably to any shoe I've owned.

Happy Camper
this is my story and I'm sticking to it.ha,haso I ordered them a half size larger than the 8.5 I normally wear because several reviewers recommended ordering half to 1 size larger.Incredibly stiff out of box.fit like a glove once my foot was inside but a real struggle to get my feet in.I felt the need to soften them up.I cold water washed them and let them air dry for 8 hours or so.my feet went in easier and then I wore them for a few hours.next day they went on much easier.I had room for a thin , padded insert for a little more cushion on the bottom.now they are breaking in great and getting more comfortable daily.

Awesome Shoes
awesome shoes. they are my day-to-day shoe, while i'm working outside in the fall/winter/spring. too bad they don't make them anymore...the only issue i have with them is the rubber toe-cap starts to wear(after about 6-8 months of continuous use) and eventually breaks down on the sides, allowing water to enter the shoe. my first 2 pairs, i exchanged through REI, and had to grab another pair for this year, before they are not available anywhere. i highly recommend them, if you can get them.

Great quality of build, comfortable
These are versatile shoes. They are very comfortable and the build quality is top-notch.These shoes were pricey, I cannot remember buying more expensive shoes. But they are worth it. The fit is extremely comfortable and you can tell they will last a long time.Merrells have a 1 year warranty too. I had another Merrell pair that ripped after about 5 months of daily wear. I bought these shoes to use while the other pair got replaced. After filling out a form and sending a picture to Merrell of the damage, I was able to exchange the other pair pretty easily. So in summary, these are great shoes and Merrell stands behind their products for a whole year. You cannot go wrong with this brand.

Order a little larger than usual
I love the Chameleon 5 shoes. I've had a pair of the vent model for several years, but they finally wore out. I got a good deal on the waterproof ones, so I thought I'd try them. They run a bit smaller than the vents. They must not compensate for the liner in the sizing. The next pair I order will be a half size larger.
