Q: Does the lens have a sealing gasket/o-ring on its mount? Is it billed as being weather-resistant?

There is a dust seal at the mount. I have now sold this lens, and changed for the much cheaper Nikon 24-85mm f3.4-4.5 VR which does a great job. In my paid work I shoot with the 70-200mm, 50mm and 12-24mm lenses, so really only need this zoom range as a walk about lens.

The 24-120 f4 is a superb lens very close in performance to prime fixed focal length lenses. The only drawback in fitting it to a D7100 is that the effective zoom becomes as 36-180mm approximately. If you don't need the extra wide angle and require a bit more telephoto reach then this will be great for you. The VR II on this lens is exceptional and you can take shake free pictures as low as 15th of a second with care. I used this on a full frame D600 after selling off three prime lenses and I was not disappointed. A close DX lens is the 16-85mm VR which is an excellent and highly underrated lens. This will give you a 24-128mm zoom on the D7100. It is half the price and will give superb results. When I owned a D7000 it was the lens I used 90% of the time. If you require enlargements above 50 x 30cms then choose the 24-120 but up to that size the 16-85 will do very well. Hope that helps.

Q: can i use this lens on my d5200 and will the quality be the same

The lens is fantastic on a full frame body like the D600 however the 16-85 DX lens is pretty close in performance and gives a similar focal length on a DX body.I have tested and owned a few 16-85 lenses on a D7000 and they are very sharp. However as the cost of a D600 body has come down now I would recommend the combination of a D600 and 24-120 f4 it is stunning. Do not go for the cheaper 24-120 as it has very variable results. I had all prime lenses (20mm, 50mm, 85mm) on the D600 originally but when for convenience and weight I swapped to the 24-120 I was not disappointed with the sharpness of this lens. Also the VRII is about the best I have used with any Nikon lens.
