Can this measure water temperature? As coffees are sometimes 80°

I use my thermometer for water temperature, just not for coffee or milk. I dye fabrics and the temperature has to be precise for certain types of dyes & cloth. I find this thermometer perfectly adequate for the purpose. Hope this helps.

should I take the protective rubber off before using it, or should I keep it on all the time?

I believe the temperature is measured at the tip so I assumed the rubber was for your safety and needed to be removed to use

Can I use this as a meat thermometer?

Temp scale goes up to 110 celcius and the clear cover over the dial is plastic, so it would not be suitable for use inside an oven. However, should work as a probe at ambient temp.
