Great for me and my needs.
My hard drive died , Toshiba 5400rpm 1TB in my HP Envy 17. I'm not a power user of the laptop so this was a good choice , price and size were good for a quick buy. Easy to install and really fast to load windows 10 from the dvd , , so so quick. This being the first time i have had to deal with a dead hard drive and my laptop out of warranty there were a few nerves at the beginning , but it was so easy to replace the hard drive. Took the power cable out , battery off and one screw out to get at the service bay. Pulled the cable off and removed hard drive and took off this blue rubber thing that was surrounding the hard drive , popped new kingston ssd in the blue rubber thing and popped the cable back in and replaced the service cover with the one screw and i was done. Simple. Putting windows 10 on it was so fast ( longest part was file copying ). Huge improvement on speed as you would expect and as i'm not a power user this drive is perfect for my needs. Windows boots in seconds , and i mean seconds to the desktop. This meets my expectations , cheap and fast giving new confidence and a smile at this nearly 3 year old laptop.

So far so good
Well, it's just arrived today. This will be a rolling review, updated as I use it. So far, a good sturdy feeling drive, lots of reviews on the web have been very complementary about it (i spent ages researching it). It is marketed as a budget drive. But what's budget about it? Well from the looks of the reviews it's not able to handle as high a workload as many of the other more expensive drives. BUT as one review pointed out, the amount of work they were using to test it was pretty high (64 queue depth)and way out of the way of people who use their system to a 'normal' degree. So it looks like if you are doing ALOT of things all at once and all wanting disk access, other drives may be better. BUT if you are doing all that you're likely to look for the higher performing drives anyway. On the positive side the reviews show it holds it's own VERY well in other areas compared again to the more expensive drives. **UPDATE 1 MONTH ON*** It's great, boots INCREDIBLY quickly and windows now flies around. If like me you are spending ages looking at all the different options and require a good fast drive and you're not going to be overloading it with work then save yourself some time and just get this one. **UPDATE 1 YEAR ON*** Excellent still (although am running out of space!!) It was time to buy another one today, BUT i just saw the reviews above. UHHOH,,,,may rethink my purchase!!!!!

Surprisingly Good
** UPDATE ** Please see the end of this review for reasons NOT to buy this ** This is my first venture into SSDs. I researched the subject carefully (Anandtech !), and it seems that SSDs are not straightforward bits of kit at all. However they have been around for a few years, and because this is a new model I'm hoping that most of the kinks have been worked out. Also for some reason I never seem to take the straightorward or safe option (which would have been a Samsung 840), and certainly wouldn't have been a Sandforce based drive. However the technology in the Sandforce controller intrigues me. There have been many well publicised issues with SF2281 based SSDs (and this is one of those), but that seems to have been a generation or 2 of firmware ago. Mine came with firmware 5.05 and so far has been fine. This drive doesn't seem to be user firmware upgradeable (at least there are no firmwares on Kingston's site), which I hadn't appreciated when I ordered it. UPDATE - I have downloaded the toolbox software from Kingston and there is an option to upgrade the firmware, however even though I know that 5.06 is being factory installed on the Chinese made versions of this drive, it is not available using this tool - good job too as 5.06 seems to be an awful lot slower than 5.05 which is what my (Taiwanese) version came with. It is blazingly quick, Windows 7 is ready to go (not just booted to desktop!) in 20 seconds from a cold start (and at least 5 seconds are performing POST). This is on a new build PC with a fresh copy of Windows on it. Applications load very quickly - Quickbooks loads in a second or 2 compared to over 20 seconds on our old office PC. The disk gets a score of 7.9 (top marks) in Windows 7 experience index, as it should. Also Windows 7 has recognised it as an SSD and has disabled defragmentation and enabled TRIM as expected. I'm very happy with it, but if the Samsung 840 (any version EVO or PRO or plain 840) were the same price I would have got one of those. **UPDATE** I'm still happy with mine, but it appears later versions of this drive use asynchronous nand, and these drives are making a lot of people angry as they don't perform to the level of the earlier drives. I had heard of this and thought it was due to the firmware, but it has been confirmed by Kingston that it is due to hardware differences. Therefore I wouldn't recommend anyone buy one of these unless it's very cheap. My disk is version 505ABBF1 and this is the good one with synchronous nand, the poor one seems to be version 506ABBF0.

Quite fast, my bootup speed and other application start up improved significantly. I don't feel any lag just click and go. I am never going back to HDD agains. It's better to invest in a ssd than better processor or something like that. If out of budget you can use 32/64/128 gb just to have your os. That will also improve things significantly. Combined with USB 3.0 read/write speeds are totally awesome. Hope these become much cheaper and mainstream.

Be, il pc è rinato!
