Would this item help thicken toe nails?

No this product is not designed to thicken toe nails. It is specifically designed to soften calluses.

Why does the directions tell you to wear gloves? Is that necessary? It is going on your skin anyway.

I would recommend wearing gloves. However as long as you wash your hands right after with soap you would be fine. You do not want to leave it on non calluses skin.
