I must have bought hundreds of lenses in my time, with a cupboard full of primes and zooms of various formats, focal lengths and apertures . And one thing I have learnt is not to expect too much from cheap-ish walkaround kit lenses with 5:1 zoom ratios - like this! But all rules are made to be broken, and this one certainly surprised me on test. And in a good way. Optically, it really exceeds expectation, with sharp centres and even decent edges from wide open. Stopped down, everything tightens up nicely and is essentially optimal by about F7.1. CA is of course dealt with in Panny bodies, and it works well with their dual IS, too. AF speed is decent and decentering was not an issue on my copy. Tested against the considerably more expensive PanaLeica 12-60, its performance proved wholly comparable within the available aperture range. Of course, that has an extra stop available, and is much better built - but what do you expect for double the price? In short, this lens offers excellent VFM and an ideal range of focal lengths for a walkaround. It's a bit plasticky, iffy for low light situations and is certainly no speed demon, but what it does, it does well. It's probably a better match for Panasonic m4/3 bodies than for Olympus, but there are plenty of good ones knocking around in sensible price ranges!

Suits my requirements just fine, using it on a Panasonic GX7 and gives me exactly the range of focal lengths I was after.

Bought this for my GH5 and been very pleased with the image stabilisation.

Wanted to replace the Lumix 12-32 that came with my GX9. Basically wanted the same focal length (24mm equiv) at the wide end with more at the long end. And the 12-60 ticks all the boxes. A 24-120mm full frame equivalent focal range all wrapped up in a small and lightweight package. Already read the pro reviews, so knew the optics made this one of the best kit lenses out there. Just wasn't ready for just how good the optics are. And the price is very good on the secondhand market. Despite being a mainly plastic lens the build and tolerances are excellent. Nice smooth zoom action and manual focus. The lens is also Power OIS, so fully compatible with the newer Panasonic bodies that use Dual OIS, combining body stabilisation with optical stabilisation. The front element is non rotating, so great for filters. Takes 58mm filters, so filters are not expensive. Fast AF. It basically has no downsides except the boggo standard max aperture of f3.5-5.6. And that would be the only reason for choosing the pricier lenses. But if you already have a few of the faster primes you have that covered anyway. Double thumbs up this lens. This is why you go Micro 4/3. A full frame 24-120 on a full frame DSLR body would be a monster.

Cheap lens for cheap performance. Well ,almost cheap. Picture quality is good in good light. Cant ask for much on this money. The zoom ring is far from smooth. The rest is fine . Great for begginers.

This is a good lens good for everyday use. Good price £349 which is half the price of the f2.8 equivelent. Not great for night photography being f3.5-5.6 but good enough.This 12-60mm is equivelent to 24-120mm on Full frame

Associé à mon GH4, pas de souci, l'ensemble fait de bonnes vidéos puisque c'est ce que je fais en priorité, bien sûr ouvrant ce n'est pas un objectif de compète, mais j'ai un budget limité. La stabilisation fonctionne bien mais c'est un peu limite à cause du GH4 qui n'a pas de stabilisation capteur. Zoom équivalent à 24-120 en 35mm tout à fait satisfaisant même sans pied ni monopode, mais à 60mm il faut se caler contre quelque chose. Au final, un bon compromis budget/performances.

Este objetivo es superior a otros objetivos de "kit" , en lo personal no he notado distorsiones exageradas, ni aberraciones cromaticas molestas, es un lente todo terreno muy recomendable. Tendrias que ser muy Snob para no utilizarlo.

In der Regel sind diese kleinbildäquivalenten 28-80er Standardbrennweiten immer eine Spur zu unbefriedigend. Entweder fehlt immer etwas im Tele- oder aber im Weitwinkelbereich. Die Megazooms haben in der Qualität zwar deutlich zugelegt (siehe z.B. das Tamron 14-150 für das mft-System), dennoch fehlt auch diesen etwas im Weitwinkelbereich. Zudem leidet nach Aussage der Fachleute die Bildqualität, je höher der Zoombereich. Somit ging die Suche los nach einer geeigneten Alternative. Das Olympus 12-40 2,8 war mir mit annähernd 900 Euro dann doch zu teuer. Das vermeintlich günstige Angebot eines Drittanbieters hier bei amazon hat sich („erwartungsgemäß“?) als Flop erwiesen. Somit neu überlegt und meine Ansprüche eine Hausnummer heruntergeschraubt. Fündig geworden bin ich dann beim Panasonic 12-60 mm. Es deckt einen sinnvollen Brennweitenbereich ab und ist universell bei Touren durch Stadt und Land einsetzbar. Zudem ist es trotz solider Haptik mit stabilem Gehäuse und Metallbajonett immer noch leicht – aber auch wiederum so groß, dass man ein echtes Handwerkszeug in Händen hält. Das Olympus 14-42 war mir einfach zu klein, zu fummelig und dazu mit dieser lästigen Entriegelungstaste versehen. Die Bildqualität des Olympus hingegen ist in Ordnung und für eine Kitoptik m.E. gut. Genau dieses Olympus (und bewusst keine Festbrennweite) habe bei den heimischen Testszenarien (z.B. Krimskrams auf dem Schreibtisch) zum Vergleich herangezogen. In der Bildmitte liefern beide scharfe und ordentliche Ergebnisse. Zu meinem Erstaunen allerdings war entgegen hier und da zu lesender Meinungen von einer Randunschärfe beim Panasonic weniger zu sehen als beim Olympus. Überhaupt sind die Ergebnisse des Panasonic kontrastreich, scharf und wirklich richtig gut. Das ist in der Tat mehr als „nur“ ein Kompromiss. Die ersten Tests draußen haben das im Grunde bestätigt. Vor allem im Weitwinkelbereich kommt das Panasonic echt in Form. Für denjenigen, der sich nicht auf die Bandbreite einer speziellen WW-Optik abstellt, eröffnet sich mit den 12 mm Brennweite ein ordentlicher Blickwinkel. Zudem haben die Fotos wirklich eine gute Schärfe. Weitere positive Überraschung, die ich aber noch in weiteren Tests an Fassaden im Stadtbereich testen werde: Die Verzeichnung scheint mir gemessen am doch großen Weitwinkelbereich vergleichsweise gering. Bei einer aufgenommenen Baumreihe sind die äußeren nicht so extrem „nach innen gekippt“, wie man das sonst schon gesehen hat. Aber wie gesagt, das ist ein erster Eindruck und wird noch weiter getestet. Am langen Ende wird es m.E. geringfügig weicher, aber immer noch sind die Ergebnisse auch in dem Bereich noch sehr gut. Zugegeben, dass alles erzähle ich hier ohne physikalische Messungen und fehlende Laborbedingungen. Der „visuelle“ Bildeindruck zählt bei mir eher – zumal das ja auch der Praxis am nächsten kommt. Als Fazit kann man festhalten, dass Panasonic mit diesem Objektiv die richtige Nische getroffen hat, mit der sich an der PEN e-pl 7 mehr als gut leben lässt. Dass die Offenblende „nur“ 3,5 beträgt, ist bei der Leistungsfähigkeit der heutigen Bildstabis zu verschmerzen, zumal moderne Kameras ja auch auch mal 800 ISO oder mehr vertragen. Für das spezielle Szenario werde ich gerne auch weiter meine Festbrennweiten verwenden – für den Immer-dabei-Einsatz, der häufiges Wechseln umständlich und schwierig macht (wartende Begleiterin..., Hund an der Leine ...) ist das Panasonic nun meine erste Wahl. Und als „Immer-Dabei“ bewerte ich es auch – und zwar mit fünf Sternen.
