Good quality, won't let you down and an excellent searchlight
This shape of torch isn't as common these days as it was 20 years ago. Before modern white LEDs came in, if you wanted a work light that would last any length of time or be bright enough to light a fair distance, it had to have a big box of D size alkaline batteries or a lead acid battery, and a big reflector to focus all the light from a relatively weak incandescent bulb. These days, with LEDs using fraction of the power and giving more light for far longer from far more efficient batteries, this "hand lamp" shape has fallen out of favour somewhat.Anyway history lesson over. Although most of the space in the "box" of this one is empty space (you can see through it when the side panel light is on), this shape still has many of the advantages of the old design. It's comfortable to carry, it's stable put on a surface, and it has a big reflector that allows all of the *extremely* bright 10W LED's light to be focused in a very tight spot for maximum distance. Some comments say it feels cheap; I'd disagree. It's superbly light but the plastic is relatively thick and strong. It's so light because the batteries are lithium ion and packing the same energy as that old stack of D batteries or a lead acid into a tiny, featherlight package. There are two, but they cannot be replaced without opening the unit, and most people will throw away the torch when these die. However, they are just standard 18650 Li-Ion, so technically you can open it and change them to prolong the item's life. They should last long over four years if looked after as-is. Unlike lead acid, self-discharge is very low, so it should still be charged six months later when you haven't been using the torch, although you should not store in a warm place or leave it flat for extended times like all rechargeables. This must be the brightest torch I've seen yet, except the million candle power gimmicky ones (the big heavy ones that last about 10 minutes and take 24 hours to charge), and definitely the brightest LED one. The spot it produces is brighter than a 85W HID torch close up and actually has more range (although it doesn't produce as much light overall). Light quality is very white and not tinted at all. It's definitely a searchlight as advertised, but that's also its weakness; there's little light spill around the main spot, so it's great at distance (easily half a mile) but won't illuminate a large area at moderate distance. Focus is fixed and can't be adjusted for that. This makes it less useful as a light for say, the home, the car, camping, or even for investigating a noise in your garden in the dark, but still far from useless. You'll just need to move that spot around a lot more. It's charged from USB (cable provided) and can charge anything else that charges from USB, making it wonderfully flexible. The indicator wasn't very accurate first time I ran it down (it stuck at 4 dots for ages then dropped to 1 very quickly), but I find that common among Li-Ion and usually settles after a few cycles. I find it very comforting that I can charge it with everything from my laptop to my car to my jumpstart battery. Battery life is excellent and for me easily met the claims (6 hours for side lantern, 2 hours for main light, full power). It also can charge a smartphone. It's IPX4, which means technically rainproof, but not submersible or for taking out in typhoons. The side panel light is good as a lantern and for close up; it's also very sunlight-white and will easily light a room. Its dimmer setting uses PWM, very common among LEDs, and some may find this hard on the eye if they can see the 'strobe' effect when lit things are in motion; others don't notice it at all. The full power setting does not use PWM. The reverse face has a flashing red SOS panel, again LED, that would be good for signing a car breakdown. The SOS runs for at least 8 hours, probably up to 12, but I haven't tested. The torch takes 6 hours to charge from flat, but can be longer depending on the USB source - computers USB are particularly slow ports to charge from. You do not get a USB charger plug with it, but they're common enough.Apart from the over-focused spot, the other factor that would make this not exceptional for camping or car use is lack of a lens cap, even a cheap one. Throw it in the boot or in luggage without one and the glass will become dull and scratched or broken. Both this and the lack of focus are a pity, as otherwise it would be perfect as a car torch with the lantern and SOS and the ability to act as an emergency phone charger, and would get the torch five stars from me.If you want a very light torch that's a spotlight that you can light a tree a mile away for hours, five stars. Stop reading now.As an all-round work light or car light though, lack of focus or lens cap really works against it, so in that case I'd give it four stars. It won't let you down, but if you don't need the searchlight you may probably find models out there that will do what you want better or for less. I keep mine in the car, but keep it in the box to protect that lens, which isn't ideal.Overall though, a good quality torch that's worth the money. You can't go really wrong getting this, even if it's not the perfect all rounder.

On my 4th and the first one is still working REALLY WELL!
Comparing the price to my numerous LED lensers etc they are 50% cheaper. Power / illumination wise they are 400% or more brighter. Battery life is amazing, charge it once a fortnight and use it every night, also battery degradation when not in use is negligible. Rarely use the work light or the flashing red beacon but great to have if it is to be kept in the car. (just bought 2 more for this purpose); Also the ability to charge a USB device from it is great: - now the dreaded gripes: Last one I bought the strap clip broke almost immediately not an issue that could not be fixed with a cable tie, Also the torch is used a lot in adverse winter conditions when wearing bulky clothing, and extra 2' of strap length would be advantageous! Would I recommend this torch - I would go further and suggest that it is a must have essential accessory for every motorist / country person. To be able to turn night into day from the bedroom window half a mile away to light up sheds when unwelcome visitors are about is "brilliant" forgive the pun! How would I improve it? Apart from the strap I would rally struggle to suggest any improvements - for me this is a really rare situation. In closing I would however suggest that you do not go out and buy one as I do not want them to run out of stock when I buy yet more!
