is this good for pelic floor excercises as well (after-birth)?

No, I really don't think so. Firstly you need to change the pads after every use, and that would mean you'd have quite a bill buying pads constantly. Secondly it does not really "reach" those muscles I'd say, it is mainly for the back muscles and tummy muscles. I am no doctor though, so maybe I am wrong, but I do not see it being much use in helping with pelvic floor exercises.

Why can't this be used before 37 weeks? I'd like to try it out to make sure it works - and also to help relieve 3rd trimester back pain

My assumption is because 37 weeks is considered full term. The tens machine simulates (?)contractions so perhaps there’s a concern it would encourage early labour if used early. For reference, I didn’t find it pleasurable to use during my contractions so you’re not missing anything. Useful but not pleasurable.

What if can not reach back to put on patches

The tens machine is really good but would definitely work better if you have someone who can help place the patches for you. I found that a bit of trial and error in moving them about made for the best pain relief.

Can it be returned if not used?

No idea, it resells quite well though
