True. And it's a pain. The main reason it's a useless idea is cos you miss all windows/social media notifications. After owning these speakers (and they are lovely speakers) for 2 months I finally had enough and solved it. The trick is to find a silent wav file (sine waveform) and keep it running in the background. Sorted.

can I connect the speakers to my record player that only has a aux in socket at the back?

What you need from your record player is an output, not an input. I it has a headphone jack, that would do it with an appropriate lead from Maplins or your local hi-fi shop.

are these pasive speakers?

No, they are active speakers. They are powered by a mini transformer from the mains. I use them as better quality speakers for my TV.
