Mitutoyo MIT500-196-30 Absolute AOS Digimatic Caliper, 0mm-150mm/0"-6" Range

I initially bought the cheaper non-digital version but swapped for this and I have no regrets because it's worth paying extra to make it easier to read measurements. It's the perfect tool to measure small/awkward items/gaps. Mitutoyo is a quality Japanese brand and it shows in their products. They clearly take pride in their creations. It comes in a carrying case with a certificate of authenticity and instructions. It only takes a couple of seconds to get it ready for your first use. The mechanism slides smoothly allowing easy adjustment to get a good reading. It's very accurate. 153.7mm is the maximum size I can measure on my unit. The digital display enclosure is plastic but the rest is metal so it's got some weight to it, not flimsy. Battery life will of course depend on usage but I doubt it draws much power. Great tool overall that I'm hopeful will last for many years.

These are my third set of digital calibers, the first 2 sets being cheap ones. For sure the cheap ones work and are fairly accurate but after a couple of years they die. The Mitutoyos are expensive but they ooze quality. Ground steel rather than plastic. Close the calipers, hold them up against a backlight and you can't see any gap between the blades due to misalignment (unlike the cheap ones). The action is incredibly smooth and slick, way better than cheap calibers which makes taking measurements so much easier. Incremental mode is fantastic, no more having to mentally take the difference between two measurements and the absolute encoding means no need to constantly rezero. We use an older set of 300mm Mitutoyos at work, no problems whatsoever over the 7 or so years we've had them. As with all calipers, check Youtube to see how to use them in all modes: outer diameter/length, inner/bore diameter/length, depth, step height. Calipers are more versatile than most people think.

I bought an 'alternative', but reputable brand of calibers which were wildly inaccurate (complete with a loose battery connection) and had to be returned. This, on the other hand, seems to be an amazing piece of kit. I've seen reviews where people have tested the Mitutoyos with calibrated blocks, showing ten-year old versions were still as accurate as when they were purchased.

Folks... There are two very good reasons that you will want a caliper from Mitutoyo 1) You need accuracy, a long working life and knowing that you got the best money can buy, within reason. 2) You love quality engineering and just looking at it gives you joy. Remember ye olde saying? : “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Now... here is a confession to you. I firmly fit in category (2). I only have need for a decent caliper very occasionally and if it is somewhat accurate?... great. So... now you know where i come from and why I decided to spend what for me was big money. As an analogy.... in my electronic work I have to use a solder sucker on occasion. Mine is made by the Engineer Company in Japan. That unit is a thing of beauty AND... it works flawlessly. But I could have bought a Knock off copy for a quarter of the price. But…. The “el cheapo” didn’t set my heart on fire, like the engineer unit does. OK back to Mitutoyo. As with all good things in life, our "friends" far away are not adverse in copying something and trying to sell it to you, pretending that you bought the original item. SO....BEWARE !!! Make sure that your hard earned money bought you a genuine Mitutoyo and not a fake one. I have enclosed a few photos of the real caliper here for you. If someone will sell you a Mitutoyo for less that about 100 pounds sterling... you are almost certainly looking at a fake. So… BEFORE you buy, visit the various YouTube video on the subject on how to spot a fake Mitutoyo. No… I am not going to re-gurtitate all the points here. But I will highlight a few. Mitutoyo will supply you with a genuine battery. Your battery will be a SR44SW, they are often made by Seiko Instruments. If you do not have a SR44, you are almost certainly looking a fake. The case itself… quality plastic AND VITALLY IMPORTANT ( see photo) the words Made in Japan should be visible embossed into the plastic. If they are not there ? You have a fake. Take a hard long look at the paper work. It should be smooth and straight and not crumbled up, pressed and crumbled by the case inserts. The certificate paper work must match the serial number on the OUTSIDE of the case. BTW.. only the very long Mitutoyo comes in a wooden case, just so you know. Folks.. there are many many more tell time signs that you have been had. Again….. check the YouTube video there are several good ones. Buy from a REPUTABLE supplier and most carefully check your newly bought unit upon arrival. Finally… you get what you pay for. That saying is as old as the hills but it holds true, today, as it will do forever. CONCLUSION: IF YOU WANT THE BREST ? LOOK NO FURTHER. Fantastic precision and quality. Cheaper options might look similar but this product is the real deal. I have had many cheaper sets over the years and I wish I’d upgraded sooner!

Deducted a star because there's no padding of any sort in the case. Maybe Mitutoyo calipers are robust enough to take a shaking but I'd rather I couldn't hear them rattling around in the case every time I moved it. Used the case from my dirt-cheap dial calipers that had a foam insert Apart from that, they're incredibly fast and accurate.

Wow, what a beautiful measuring instrument this is. I have done the necessary checks to ensure that this is a genuine Mitutoyo caliper and I am 100% certain that it is. The quality is outstanding. The readability of the display is excellent. I have been using a standard vernier caliper, as I now know, for way too long). I'm 60 and my eyesight is not as good as it once was. I decided to go for this one and am so glad that I did. It's a delight to use! The only thing I would say as a very slight negative (as others have said in their reviews) is that the grey in/mm button is lower than the other three buttons and can be difficult to activate. It's clearly a design choice and not a fault. It's an odd choice though, as there may be occasions where one might want to do a quick conversion from metric to imperial or vice versa. I'm not going to mark it down for that though. I could not be happier with this purchase.

I was worried about receiving a fake one (like some had in the reviews), but it seems like I was given a legit, brand new Mitutoyo calipers. Very happy with this. Mitutoyo quality is always there. You pay for what you get. Finely ground and honed measuring surfaces which are close to mirror finish. Properly calibrated with calibration documents.

Rien à dire évidemment sur la précision et la grande qualité des produits Mitutoyo. Je tiens quand même à souligner la rapidité d'envoi. De plus, j'avais quelques craintes concernant l'authenticité de l'instrument : Youtube regorge de mises-en-gardes concernant les clones chinois des produits Mitutoyo. J'ai donc été agréablement surpris de constater que celui qui m'est parvenu répond bien à toutes les spécifications des produits authentiques. Merci à TJR Products, vendeur de ce matériel.
