Oxford Essential Italian Dictionary: Italian-English - English-Italian

I love a good language dictionary and this one does the job perfectly for a beginner to Italian. It's not a pocket sized dictionary but is still portable enough to pop into a rucksack if you're on your travels around Italy and want to have a go at the lingo. It also comes in handy when duolingo throws a word at you which you haven't come across yet on your language journey. We do love that little green owl don't we. Back to the dictionary - the pages are easy enough to read, there's a handy irregular verb table at the back along with a page on numbers and everything else you just have to look up.

Very good dictionary for beginners. I advise.

This is a handy paperback-sized book, offering Italian|English at the front and English|Italian at the back. With about 254 pages per language, it inevitably only covers basic Italian and English. The words definitions are brief, and do not offer etymology but, if you just need to look-up words quickly, then this book is ideal. At the back, the book also provides verbs and numbers in Italian and English. They cover just the basics but are quite handy if you are stuck and need a quick answer. The book size is: 175 x 110 mm, and 30 mm thick. I bought this to accompany the massive but fabulous Oxford-Paravia Italian Dictionary . The pair of books complement each other very nicely.

If learning Italian, use in conjunction with the Bescherelle Verb book (available from Amazon). I am wading through Duolingo, and find the OEI dictionary totally adequate. I am also using, from Amazon, Harrap's German Paperback Dictionary, equally to learn German on Duolingo, and it's great too, but used in conjunction with Bescherelle's German Verb book (available from Amazon).

The translations are decent enough, bit if you're getting this book for the Italian IPA, don't. The mention of IPA is misleading because it only has the IPA written for the English words (which is essentially useless for an English-titled book).

A definite go-to when studying the Italian language.
