Toshiba Canvio Wireless Adapter for External Hard Drives (HDWW100XKWF1)

It is my hobby for long time to backup my favorite videos and photos to my USB HDD, I have so many private and family stuff, I hate to use iCloud to backup it to the public cloud, cause I high suspect what Mr.Snowden said maybe true ..., so I bought a bunch of USB HDD to do the backup, Toshiba's Canvio USB HDD is my best, so cute and elegant! the man's data storage capacity is never enough, just like women's clothes :), but after I begin to use iPad and iPhone years ago, I found I can't access my HDD from my iPad and iPhone any more, oh, my Godness, I used my iPhone to take thousands my baby girl's photo, and I use iPad to watch the video every day, if I can't backup my private photo and watch my favorite video, oh, I am suffered this for long time until I see Toshiba's this cute wireless adapter in Amazon! Yes, I bought it when it shows in website, although it is said 1-2 month shipping time in the beginning, after I place the order, Amazon told me it will ship it in 1-2 days, great!When I receive this package at home, it looks cute, the website's picture looks size is big, but it is really small one! I open the box, plug the USB cable connected with adapter and AC power adapter inside, and also connect adapter with my Toshiba Canvio 1TB USB HDD in another said, turn on the AC power, then around 20 seconds, the USB LED turns stable blue, I enable the official apps "wireless adapter" in my iPad, bingo! it go! So simple, I can access my HDD from my iOS device now!I had a bunch of test video in my HDD, I use funny "big bunny", 1080p FHD MP4, use official apps to play it in my iPad air, oh, it is so smoothly, great, my baby girl saw it, then she take hold of this iPad, watch this video again and again, oh, I had to use my iPhone instead cause she took my position!I use my iPhone to stream another my best new videos, then one issue, most of my videos is not MP4 format, Real Video and MKV are the main stream, but official apps can't support this format! What can I do? In usual, I am using nPlayer, the best video player apps I found, to access my wireless adapter, after some retries, I found this Toshiba device can be found by search "SMB/CIFS", and with automatic scan, nPlayer can find my HDD! I use this apps to watch all the different formats videos at my hand, it works perfectly, amazing!Another big usage for me to buy this device is to backup my iPhone 5S's thousands photos, I found Toshiba official apps can't support this! This is definitely big weakness of this apps! Then I take some times to see if third party apps can do this job, I uses "PhotoSync" apps to backup my iPhone5S apps more often, but it looks this apps can't find my device by auto scan, after some hours trial, I found it can use WebDAV to access this adapter, i need configure this ErbDAv account with "Server:192.168.65.1", port as 81, then I can use my PhotoSync apps to backup my over three thousands to my HDD within half hours, so fast! Very stable!In short, this is exactly device I want to buy, cute, portable,simple to setup, work with my HDD well, I studied Seagate's wireless plus for a long time, you know, $150 with 1TB, I hesitates a long time but give up to buy at last, I have so many HDD already, $150 is too expensive for me, right now, I just need 49$ to enable all my existing USB HDD! battery operated is not so useful for me, cause I have 10000mAh battery pack already!Some weakness of this device, this device supports some third party apps very well, but no official introduction in its website, and I tried some hours to make it works, but for most of people, some guidance is better.Overall, I want to give this device 5 stars although some little things need be improved!

Brilliant hardware marred by terrible software and incredibly poor documentation.This device beautifully shows why Toshiba is struggling and has withdrawn from the PC market in much of the world. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the hardware; it's a fantastic little (and I do mean little--this thing is tiny, far smaller than the picture makes it seem) device.Everything else about it is miserably awful.Be prepared for some confusion when you first get it. The only documentation is a one-page Quick Start sheet that leaves out a lot of important information and makes setting up the device incredibly frustrating.Things the miserable documentation does not tell you:1. The hard drive must be formatted NTFS. Not FAT, not FAT32, not EXT3, not Mac, it must be NTFS. Nothing anywhere tells you that. You do not get an error message if the hard drive isn't formatted correctly--it just says there's no hard drive.2. When you go to install the software on your phone or tablet, be careful! You need to install "Toshiba Wireless Adapter." Not "Toshiba CANVIO." Not "CANVIO Home." Not "Toshiba Wireless HDD." Not "Toshiba Storage." You have to install "Toshiba Wireless Adapter." The quick start sheet that comes with the device is wrong. It tells you to install "CANVIO Wireless Adapter APP." This will not work.3. The app is buggy, at least for iOS. For instance, if you run the app, then you go to the iOS Settings app to choose the wireless adapter in WiFi, when you switch back to the app it will crash. Launch it again.4. The app lacks the ability, again on iOS, to upload your pictures or video to the wireless hard drive. That means that you need to disconnect the hard drive from the wireless adapter, connect it to your computer, copy files on it, then connect it back to the wireless adapter to see your content.5. You can not use a hard drive larger than 2 TB. Again, this is not mentioned anywhere in any documentation. If you try, you won't get any sort of error message--it just won't work.All of these problems are in software and documentation, not hardware. They show how Toshiba is fine at creating hardware, but there's an enormous disconnect between their hardware and software teams.If you can deal with these frustrations, it's a neat device at a great price. But if you're not a tinkerer and you expect something that just works, this isn't for you.It was introduced at a $59 price point and almost everyone is discounting it to about $10, largely, I think, because the software is so poorly written and the documentation is so unbelievably terrible it crippled what otherwise might have been a successful product.

I bought this Toshiba device for my existing USB HDD (Toshiba and WD) and other USB flash drive, after hours to play, I found this small gadget is powerful than my expectation! I also notes that quite a few negative reviews here, since most of them complain on the poor product user manual, I have the same feeling, this excellent gadget is degraded by Toshiba's poor product user manual! so I feel 4 star is reasonable for me on this product.Here is my experience on this product, good or bad:Setup1. the appsPls search "Wireless Adapter for Toshiba" in Apps Store, you will find out an apps by "Fujian Star-net eVideo Information Systems Co,. Ltd", NOT TOSHIBA!, this is weird, but this is the official apps provided for this device.2. USB cable between USB HDD and Toshiba devicePls use the short USB cable (30cm or less) to connect USB HDD and Toshiba device, if this cable is longer, then Toshiba device may not power on the USB HDD connected, I met this issue before.3. USB HDDThe description on website is confusing, somewhere it claims all USB drive, but somewhere it claims any Toshiba portable USB drive. As other guys comment, it can only support no more than 2TB USB HDD right now, if your USB HDD is 3.5", you may need external power supply on your 3.5" USB HDD4. File FormatToshiba's this device only supports NTFS/FAT/FAT32, don't support HFS+ for MAC, this is a big loss for MAC users, strongly encourage Toshiba to add it!5. LEDsWhen Toshiba device is setup correctly, you will see the USB LED in the device turns BLUE stably, the WiFi LED and system LED turn into GREEN stably, if not, your setup is not right, pls come back to check above setup items 1-4.Access from iOS/Android device1. Access from iOS/Android device is quite more simple, you just need download that "official" "Wireless Adapter for Toshiba" apps, then you can use the basic functions of Toshiba's this device2. This "official apps" can support video/photo/music/document view and playback, upload video/photo from camera roll, and setup to the device3. The function of "upload video/photo from camera roll" looks "hidden" by Toshiba? you need go to "File/Folder" view, find the network drive, step into one folder, then press the "..." icon in the upper right corner of the apps, it will show "Album" button at the bottom, press "Album", you will find the "Camera Roll" in "Album" view, go into "Camera Roll", there is a thumbnail view of your camera roll, then you can click multiple photos, and press "Upload" button in upper right corner, then uploads selected photos onto the network drive.4. You can also use your phone's camera to take a photo, then it will directly save to the network drive. Here is the way, go for "File/Folder" view, step into a folder, then press the "..." icon in the upper right corner of the apps, it will show "Album" button at the bottom, press "Album", you will find the "Camera" in upper right corner, press "Camera" into camera view, take a photo, press "Use Photo", this photo will be saved into the last folder you enter with the file name as "IMG_XXXXXXXX_XX.jpg"5. This official iOS apps can only support native supported video playback, the file like Real Video and MKV are not supported by this apps.6. If you want to access Toshiba storage device and go to internet via another WiFi router (for example, your home WiFi router), you need do setup in the apps as this way, go to setup icon in upper right corner in the first view of the apps, , go to the line of "WLAN", "Choose Network" you want to connect with (it should be your home WiFi router in this case , "Input password" of your home WiFi router, then you can access internet from your apps and access storage device at the same time.Access from Windows PC1. Power up the device with right setup2. Check the LEDs of the device is correct, they should be stable for BLUE(USB), GREEN(SYSTEM) and GREEN(WiFi)FAQ3. Connect your Windows's WiFi to the device with SSID as "Toshiba wadp XXXX"4. Input "\\192.168.65.1" in Windows File Explorer, then you can find the network drive with "share" folder as entranceOther apps recommended for this device1. "PhotoSync - wireless transfer, backup..." by "touchbyte GmbH" for iOS, this apps embedded the support for Toshiba's this device for iOS with newest V2.2 version, although it is not free, but it is much better than Toshiba's "official" apps, it can backup only NEW photos/videos from your camera roll, this feature is impressive and I love it very much, When you sync your camera roll with this apps, you can pick up "Toshiba Canvio Wireless Adapter" as the target, cool!2."nPlayer" by "Newin Inc." for iOS, this apps can support all the video formats I know and stream the video from Toshiba's this device, you can select "WebDAV" or "SMB/CIFS" for this storage device, with "Scan Network" function, you can find Toshiba's this device automatically. I tried "WebDAV" or "SMB/CIFS", it works both, but I feel "WebDAV" looks more smoothly when I stream videos from this deviceFrankly, I love the idea of adapter form factor, so I don't need buy Seagate's Wireless Plus with more than 100 bucks, and can reuse the USB HDD I bought before, User manual of Toshiba's this device is really poor, that's why so many poor review in this website, Yes, with documentation, it is hard for you to set it up at the first time, but, after hours you are familiar with, you will find it is great for use it everywhere, I am using one in the car, another one at home, it looks great!

I spent countless hours on this thing for a few of my days off from work trying to get this thing set-up. It may only cost a few bucks, but I don't know how many hundreds of dollars it cost me in labor to install it. All for what? I save a few minutes a week plugging and unplugging drives when trying to move and back-up files personal and work files? Though I still have to plug and unplug into this unit with smaller drives since it cannot handle my 3TB unit.First, I made the mistake of setting the password the moment it connected. With the password set, it would not connect to my phone. This is what cost me the most time trying to resolve this connection. But, hey I don't want people in my apartment complex to access my personal or work files, so I wanted it secured.Anyway, I connected it to my PC with it password protected and it worked fine, no hassles. Five minutes to get the IP and map the drive. Simple enough. But, I couldn't get it to connect to my phone and simultaneously to my wi-fi internet connection. I tried calling the helpline. It was pretty obvious the Indian on the other end was simply accessing a help guide on her computer at this outsourced call center. She had no experience or knowledge of the product beyond what her screen prompted her, and she was just repeatedly asking if it was plugged in, if the lights were on, etc. Furthermore, she just kept taking me through the same troubleshooting steps. She obviously didn't comprehend the product (like asking if it was fully charged), nor did she understand my problem. The call center was of no help and I actually lost connection, so at least I didn't waste more time with her.After countless resets, countless trial-and-errors at each step, I managed to get it connected to my phone via station mode (so I connect to it via wifi, instead of to my wifi through it, given the limited 5m range), and all password protected so people cannot steal my files. But now it won't connect to my PC since I went station mode. Seems it is one or the other via password protected station mode.After all this, I found it doesn't even work with my 3TB drive. So, I guess I will use it with my smaller external drives and my thumb drives and just use these drives via plug-and-play with my computer. Basically, I will only use the wireless component with my phone just to move files from my phone versus other wireless apps like dropbox.What a waste of time and money. Unless you have a specific use in mind, like streaming movies on a car ride from a drive for kids, I would avoid this product for simple home of office use like backing-up devices and computers. Just plug-and-play your hard drives and thumb drives because this wireless device is not worth the time or money.

All I can say is I love this little thing. When it arrived I thought it would be about the size of my range extender to my surprise it is very small maybe 1.5 inch wide by two inch long by 3/8 inch thick and has a better wifi signal then my 1750ac router. I downloaded the manual and read over it while I was waiting for it to arrive I also got the android app for it installed.I powered it up waited for the lights to get solid connected to the wifi signal opened the app setup bridge mode to get onto the internet put in my usb drive and was watching movies up to about 50 ft away. I wished I have found dead this before I did all the work to bet my plex pogo working. In fact I loved this so much I ordered two more at this price you can not go wrong.You do want to connect to the internet and upgrade the software. I also like the fact that I can connect this to my battery and have it work I the car and on long rides people not driving of coarse can watch video.Now on the down side is that it has a hard time streaming 1920 by 1080 15mbit stream but can handle two 5mbit or 4 to 5 2.5mbit streams.Update I just tested this in station mode and it network mount just like any other network drive. This way anyone in the house can connect to it using the app or windows. Can not say for mac cause I do not have one.From what I have found bad you can only have one usb connected but I am going to keep testing thisNow do not think this is a nas server it is not but for a portable media streamer it is greatI just tested this as nas to transfer files and it only does about 3MiB rate but remember it is meant for a media server which it does very well

I'm giving it 3 stars for my trouble. Had it not been for that, I'd be giving it 5 stars for operation and usability. Like many others here, I had trouble getting this to work. Unlike many, I'd like to remind anyone in the middle of trying to get it to work that there IS a Reset button. It proved crucial to my experience, and a tiny, only once-mentioned, detail in the instructions. (It doesn't even warrant an index entry) In particular because I got the adapter to work initially, and then spent the better part of the next two days trying to get it to work again.In my case, I unpacked it, powered it up, and put a known flash drive (formatted as FAT32) into the device. On my ipad, I'd already dl'd the Toshiba Wifi software (yes, they finally put it under the Toshiba name), opened it up, selected Internet, and watched it get recognized. All this happened almost without my intervention. I wasn't too surprised, since I already administer and operate a home LAN on a DLink DIR-655 router that is hand-configured to deal with the wired and wireless devices I have around with decent security, so I'd already entered the device's MAC address and assigned an IP. I expected it to work and it did.However, it wasn't quite clear to me yet whether I wanted to use the device in Station mode or Bridge mode. It had booted into Bridge mode and I quickly verified that I could see the flash drive contents, both from Toshiba's software as well as the FileBrowser app I use on my ipad, which comes designed to use this Toshiba wifi device (which is why I bought this, and not some other, wifi device). So, in the spirit of experimentation, and without doing anything else, I switched it from Bridge to Station mode, thinking I'd be able to easily switch it back if it didn't work. That's when things went quickly downhill.The device disconnected (obviously). But I quickly realized that, while the device could be seen in the area wifi list of the ipad System Settings, it would not actually connect (with a blue check mark). I had an IP (192.168.65.1) that supposedly a web browser should've allowed me administrative access to the device, but never could get that to work. So I was going in circles. The Toshiba software could see the device name; I could switch back and forth between my home router and the device itself, but could never get back to choosing Bridge mode again. My thinking was, I could 'force' it back into making the query. I was trying everything, switching from dhcp to static discovery mode (where you enter IP and subnet info by hand) to shutting my home network down entirely, thinking it might be interfering with the ipad wifi connection. Nothing worked.Finally, logic crept back into my thinking. I knew I was in Station mode, and that I wanted to put the device back into its default (Bridge) mode. But there was nothing in software that was allowing me to do this. And I thought, "No way they designed this thing without an ability to reset into default settings". So, only THEN did I pick up the device to specifically look for a physical button or something. That's when I noticed the pin-hole. Pushing and holding the end of a paperclip in there for 3 seconds indeed rebooted the device.Long story short, I got back to being able to choose Bridge mode. Everything worked. After having viewed the manual at least a dozen times, I went back to look for what I'd discovered, the Reset button. Indeed, the legend to the one diagram of the device DOES indicate and label a 'Reset' button. I'd missed it the whole time. But then it was the ONLY reference to that button ANYWHERE in the manual. Also, having read dozens of Amazon reviews, I didn't recall a single person mentioning this detail either. So, I have to wonder whether others having trouble with this device might also have benefitted from knowing there was a Reset button?So, this thing DOES work, as advertised. And its a lifesaver that makes up for the ipad's shortcomings vis a vis exposing a filesystem and avoiding you having to fill up the limited file-space on the device itself. But man, did Toshiba make me WORK to get it operational!

This wireless adapter is great! I do not understand why so many people are having trouble with it. There's a tutorial on youtube about how to set it up and as long as your HD or USB are formatted correctly it's literally a plug-in-download-your-app-you're-done process.I am NOT a tech person. I can function on both windows and mac and I have an iPhone, but I'm not super tech savvy or anything. When my husband and I got this I was a little worried about setting it up, but after watching the youtube video and searching about the HD format I thought it wouldn't be too hard. And it wasn't. The app is very intuitive and you don't need any software for your HD or computer. Just plug the adapter in, start the app on your smartphone/tablet and you're good to go! It took me about 10 minutes to set up.The app has a lot of nice features too... one really important one is that you can password protect the wifi network that the device is creating. This is very important because you don't want everyone to access it!I guess the only complaint is that when you watch a video sometimes part of it cuts off if you flip your device. So start your device in the direction that you want to use it and just click on your content and you shouldn't have any trouble.For real, this thing is awesome!

Molto utile e comodo sia come dimensioni (è davvero piccolo) sia per quanto riguarda l'utilizzo. L'app funziona perfettamente, ma se utilizzate un pc o android con un file explorer (ES file explorer ad esempio) potete "navigarlo" senza app. Semplicemente più veloce. Può essere alimentato anche da una presa usb, cioè sia con alimentatore a parete sia con una usb molto capace, come un powerbank almeno da 2A. Funzionale alla perfezione

Un aparato genial. Solo tiene la pega que tiene que estar alimentado constantemente, pero es lo de menos. Con una simple aplicación de la marca del aparato, se puede acceder a cualquier dispositivo que le conectes, hasta un HDD de 3 TB funciona.Es un aparato pequeño y se alimenta por micro usb, asi que no tienes que andar con ningún cable distinto.
