The dimensions stated of this portable radio do not look correct - 52 x 48 x 34cm. What are they really?

Correct, they are not correct. It's about 75mm x 130mm x 40mm. Not good quality however.

Does this kit make those wonderful sounds during tuning?

while tuning into a station it sounds similar to being in a tin shack during a thunderstorm but when it picks up a station the sound quality can be surprisingly good given how cheap it is .I use it while working outdoors so the reception is usually pretty good and I wouldn't be too devastated if it fell into a cement mixer accidentally given it's cost !

will it pick up 990 on medium wave?

I really couldn't say mine lasted a couple of weeks had loads of problems with it and dumped it

does it have a usb port?

No there is no USB port on this one
