is it expensive to run

I pay about 2.00 extra a week on previous pay metre and have it running from midday till about 7 daily. I don't think it is too expensive for the fact that it does a better job than an expensive purifier. .. with the right oil smells amazing. Hope that helps x

what kinds of gases does it filter?There is some construction work nearby and welding fumes are diffused to my room.Does it filter the welding fumes?

Hi I don't know about welding/metallic fumes, but it has filtered very successfully bonfire/fireworks smoke, which I suspect can be worse?! I use the Eucalyptus essential oil with it, has been the best to remove odours and freshen/purify the air, really quickly (within seconds). 4-5 drops of the stuff in cold water works magic. Hope this helps.

Is the filter (ie, the 'spike' that goes into the bowl) removable for cleaning?

Yes, the spike does come off the circular plate (both plastic) for cleaning. I wouldn't call it a filter though, it's what I'd call an agitator.
