I have the canon 7d, will this act as pre-amp? i'm asking because my 7d on its own has a terrible amount of hiss that ruins videos completely

Yes it will. You'll just need an extra 3.5mm cable to run from the Tascam's camera out to your 7D's mic input. Remember in the cameras menus to turn the audio to manual and the gain all the way down first, that will give you the cleanest audio.

Just purchased. works well standalone. as soon as i fix it to 5dmk111 body i get a hum (happens on 3 dif bodies). seems known prob. any ideas anyone?

I never had this issue on Panasonic and Olympus bodies but I am always using it on a cage and it's not directly touching the body. From my experience the hum is a sign of some leaking electricity from either the recorder or from the camera body of some bad isolation on the connecting audio cables.

its really quiet even on high gain. i want my dialogue to sit at about -6db. is there anyway of making it louder without resorting to hi-plus gain?
