Great little book!
I had fun reading the short stories in this book, it is simplistic, easy to understand without the need of the dictionary. It covers everything you would need to know if you wanted to travel to France and have a decent conversation with the people around (i.e introductions, weather, environment, even clothes shopping). I found myself reading it out loud at some point without even realising. I definitely recommend it if you think your French got a little rusty or simply just want to learn the language. It is a great and fun way to start!

A good way to learn French vocabulary and to practice the ...
A good way to learn French vocabulary and to practice the difficult task of listening to and understanding the French voice. There's a lot of content to be learned from the stories in this book and the associated audio downloads. There are different suggestions for way of using it depending on your starting level. Despite the title, I don't think I'd recommend it for an absolute beginner though. It's fine once you've got the basics, but I think you'd need to get those from another source. There are two recordings of each story, a slow one and a faster one, once you've picked up what's being said in the slow one you can move on. I still can't help but think though that even the faster one is not at the speed you'd expect from a native French speaker. So it may be useful if a third, faster, speed of recording was introduced. That said, I like the format and would certainly buy further products from this author.

A friend of mine recommended me this book as she has only started to learn French recently. Thus, I took her suggestion into consideration and I've started reading it too. I've studied French in school for a few years but not using it, I forgot how to speak. This book helped me a lot, it helped me improve my reading and listening skills. The stories are not only interesting to read but also revolve around useful situations such as weekend activities, food, shopping and travel. There's a vocabulary recap at the end of each lesson so you get the chance to review everything that you've been learning. I've got 2 favourite parts, the first one is called 'Refaire sa garde-robe' and the second one is 'Un week-end a Paris' (think it is lesson 9). The second one is a short story about Edward who decided to take the train from Rouen and go on a short trip to Paris.I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning French or just learning more about the French culture.Diana

Superb!
This is far better than I had anticipated and is exactly what I need. I did not study french at school, but as I studied another language, I have a reasonable understanding of grammatical patterns and what to look for in sentence structures.I have learned a little basic vocabulary from beginners' books for perhaps a month, but I really needed to know how the words should be pronounced. This is perfect! The slower speed enables a novice like me to register the sounds of individual words and the faster speed is closer to real-time talking. The text introduces useful phrases early on, but it is not intimidating. I would have been lost if I had not learned some rudimentary vocabulary earlier, but with a little advance basic preparation, this is exactly what I now need. Highly recommended!

OK for French reading but some annoyances
Ok book to improve reading fluency in French BUT there are some serious problems with the presentation of text, layout and formatting which most publishers would have ironed out. For example, there are weird spacings between words etc, there is inconsistency in capitalisation in the word banks (days of week/months really shouldn't be capitalised in French - here sometimes they are are, sometimes they aren't) and the switching between vocab and story is not always easy on the eye to follow.

This is a useful book
I studied French at school but never had much chance to talk with native French speakers. As I am going to France in a few months, and hope to stay with a French family, I am definitely going to read through and to listen to this book a few more times. It has short real life stories (with conversations) and deals with everyday situations - which is what I need. I find it amusing to see how everyday life and language (as reflected in the book) changed since introduction of mobile phones and email, completely absent from my school's French books. I also like the fact that all the audio which comes with the text is in 2 versions, normal speed and very slow one, for people like me whose French is a bit rusty. The only improvement I can think about would be "play audio" buttons within the text but I guess this may not be possible within the usual ebook format. The book is not expensive and completely worth it!

Very useful!
I have started a French evening class and I am getting along well with grammar and reading, but I need to practice my listening skills. Songs and movies – even with subtitles – are too advanced, but this book is really helpful. The style suits me, and I enjoy listening to the “slow” stories while pottering around the house. The storie read at a faster pace are still too challenging, but I like the idea that in a few weeks’ time I will be able to listen to them and understand them! All in all, a very good purchase!

An excellent and rewarding tool
French: Short Stories For Beginners is an excellent tool for anybody wishing to improve their French reading and speaking abilities. The book is divided into a number of stories, each featuring a range of vocabulary and useful English translations. Each chapter also has a 'Vocabulary Recap' section which allows the reader to revise learnt words and test their knowledge.I'd highly recommend this book to any beginners (and those with more advanced abilities wishing to solidify their knowledge) wishing to learn to speak French in an elaborate and interesting way.

Recomendo

Superb!
This is fantastic for beginners. I had done some French at school years ago and had forgotten almost everything. Not sure whether to call myself a beginner as I had a little background knowledge. This book is exactly what I needed. Simple little stories followed by vocabulary lists after each section. 2 x Audio accompaniments for each story. One slow and the other at normal speed. So much more than I expected. Great value for money. I highly recommend this book.
