how does it work without a clamp?

You twirl your hair around it from top to bottom and hold onto the end of the strand with your fingers. They supply a heat proof glove so your fingers don't get singed. It's less cumbersome than dealing with a clamp. Really quick too.

I have a different conical curling wand but find my hair slides down it when i wrap it round- its really annoying! Does this happen with this one?

This wand has quite good grip and shouldn't cause the hair to slide down the wand.
