Wonderful way for my children to learn Spanish / French without even trying to 'learn' !
I bought the Spanish Kloo board game (Race to Madrid) after feeling a little disillusioned with a recent educational DVD that my kids just weren't interested in! ( As a languages graduate, it has always been my aim to get my own children ahead with their French and Spanish). I found Kloo purely by accident while searching online for language resources, and decided to give it a go based on its very positive reviews, and am so glad I did - I am genuinely delighted with it so far! Apart from being a very enjoyable game in its own right, after a very short time my children have learnt almost all the words in deck 1 which relate to food and drink, ordering in a restaurant etc. They can build sentences using all the relevant parts of speech and they and have an increased awareness of masculine/feminine nouns, placement of adjectives, verb conjugations (1st person singular and plural only in deck 1 - which is perfect) not to mention a varied and useful vocabulary that is relevant and fun for children. I have also brushed up on my own, slightly rusty, Spanish and my children love trying to catch me out! We don't play the whole game every night but rather just leave the game out and continue where we left off, meaning that there are no battles over going up to bed as they can't wait to play each night. My son, who has additional support at school with his English, finds this game motivating and enjoyable - the results are better than I'd even hoped initially. His pronunciation needs a bit of work but with the phonetic spelling on each card, even this aspect has been thought of and addressed in a way that allows children to sound authentic. I have now also bought the first two French card decks, however, I just want to focus on the Spanish for another week before we swap. I am pleased to see that the French deck 1 corresponds quite closely to the Spanish, which means we already have plenty of clues and a good head start. Overall this is a fantastic game and I wish teachers would use it instead of simply teaching a string of sentences without any explanation of how they are built up. I'm certain that by using this as a teaching resource chidren would learn much more effectively and be more inspired. Just need more hours in the day to play it. My favourite purchase in a long time.

A must for all those French beginners!
I bought this game for my daughter who has just started secondary school (and French!). As my husband or I could not help her with her French I looked for a game to help us out and found Kloo....it took a few games to get in to it, but once we'd found out exactly what we were doing it was good fun (and became quite competitive!). My daughter's french has come on leaps and bounds, as has ours. She no longer worries about going to her French lesson as she has picked up very quickly how sentences go together...we were so impressed by the game we also bought the Spanish version. I would highly recommend this game, especially to all beginners. Tracy Smith

A Great Idea
A great idea but haven't used it yet because it is for a child's birthday.

Surprising how quickly it was picked up by a non French speaker
An instant hit with my family, all in our 20s. One of us learned French at school, one has been trying to learn it on and off through language tapes, and one of us has no French experience at all and previously no interest in learning French! All 3 of us really enjoyed the game and picked up both the rules and the vocabulary very quickly. We played it collaboratively more than competitively and it was fun to speculate on possible word meanings based on other languages (e.g. Spanish) and to note when our theories were right and wrong. By the end of the day, we had all virtually learned the whole deck, but felt it would have replay value because we'd slowly forget the words over time unless we practised. It's definitely aimed at the beginner as the grammar is only basic, but it's the best way I've seen to get started really quickly and most importantly, build enthusiasm.

Fantastic way to learn a language
I've bought the cards for my kids (8&10yo) who have started to learn French couple of months ago. Idea behind the game is genius - color coded cards teach you sentence structure, so you are learning French grammar without even realizing. My kids really enjoy it and they are making up variations of this game. Highly recommended to anybody that want to learn a new language or brush off those language skills.

Not what expected , not really a game!

Missing lots of words to make it a suitable game. Only nouns, two relative pronouns (qui and que) and a few 'et'. You cannot build interesting sentences, only basic ones, so after 5 minutes, it becomes pointless, repetitive and unless you want to use the game for nouns flashcards, the whole point of the game is lost. There is no challenge as players can always build a sentence with their cards so it's not even fun. Such a shame as it was a great idea to start with. Instructions are not very clear either. But cards are good quality and with bright colours.

Great game for French learners (in class and individually)
I teach French at the university level as well as for adult enrichment learners. I'm always looking for new ways for my students to practice and learn, and I saw Kloo when browsing for games for the classroom. It has been a real hit with my students, many of whom have left class with the intention of buying their own decks. Some educational games just don't "play well". But this one is enjoyable and the cards' structure makes for good and flexible game play. What I particularly like about the game is that while it is totally accessible to children, it does not feel strictly like a child's game. Even my students who get grumpy about playing 'silly' games in class liked this one. One student said that the strategy of the game, collecting cards and laying out plays, reminded her of Scrabble. And they seem to be retaining the vocabulary they learn in the game. Now sometimes when I present new vocabulary in class, the students tell me they already know it because of what they call "The Game". I also like the versatility of play. There are multiple suggestions for variations with the decks, and one could easily tweak the rules further to find new ways to play. Also it works well for small and large groups and can be played independently as well. I make decks available to students who finish quizzes and in class assignments early. They can amuse themselves and learn at the same time while others are still working. All in all, a great game. And the price is reasonable too, especially for those of us who end up buying classroom supplies out of pocket.

and found it fun and challenging
My wife writes: I requested and received French "Kloo" for Christmas. Looked for appropriate games to share with classmates over semester break from a first-level French community college class that had just ended. Eager to give it a try, I recruited my husband to play two games from deck 1, and found it fun and challenging. Each of us had studied French in college, each with a different focus on the language. He recognized verbs in various conjugations, which now was more difficult for me. Both of us learned nouns he had never encountered before. So we, with constant repetition of their use in context, became comfortable speaking phrases. Then learned new adjectives to build our sentences. I can't wait to share this with my new friends during the holiday break!

I bought this game for myself and another adult to start learning French because things are easier when they're fun. I think this is a really smart game because it's so simple -- and you can bring the cards with you easily. we've played the game a number of times and it's a nice combination of card game like gin rummy as well as "concentration" where you need to try to remember things -- both of which are helpful in learning a language. I also like that you can print out your own cards, though I haven't done it and I'm not sure how well they'd integrate if not printed on the same card stock. the cards present a phonetic spelling of the words but we also keep a cellphone handy with google translate to help correct our pronunciation. I had thought there would be many games to teach a language but I will say that I think these guys did a good job with this.

The concept is great, using a system of colored arrows to guide someone just learning the language to be able to make short sentences by placing cards in the order that matches the arrow colors. A very good learning tool. However, no instructions or rules for the various games were included. You have to go online to get those. Some of the games require a game board that is sold separately.
