I had always used test strips, but on using this liquid test, I found my strips were very inaccurate...by as much as 10ppm. Instructions seem a lot but after the first couple of times you will find it easy to use, and so much more accurate than the test strips. I keep Dwarf Rams and have a possible breeding pair, so accuracy of my water tests is important.

Good test kit for Nitrates. The colour chart is a little bit difficult to gauge but advice online seems to be to focus on the hues (orange/red) rather than the saturation. Turns out my tap water is 40ppm nitrate so this has made maintaining my aquarium a lot more...interesting!

I have found this test kit easy to use and have confidence in its accuracy to detect nitrate in the aquarium water. Knowing what the nitrate level is to begin with in the domestic tap water supply I have been able to gauge the increase by comparison following the aquarium water test. I have found that the colour achieved from the two tests is very similar so from this I deduce that the aquarium water is being well filtered, ammonia/ammonium levels are low and that safe nitrate levels are being achieved. The tap water where I live has reasonably low levels of nitrate so any large increase would indicate a problem in my aquarium. You must make this comparison as you cannot be sure without it if the nitrate is being 'manufactured' by the fish or is already in the water. The test card with the colour comparison check list is quite difficult to read at low levels where the orange colours are so close together. However, the very low and very high readings (colours) would be easy to differentiate as they are so different in colour. Inspect under natural lighting conditions and hold the test tube to the side of the test card as holding it against the opaque test card makes the reading look darker than it actually is. The kit will enable many tests to be carried out so it really is value for money.

I am a beginner at this hobby. I have bought a number of different things and I am sure some of the professionals will say I didn't need halve of it! This kit is easy to use but for me the colour gauge/chart doesn't seem to be very clear. I use it anyway and I haven't lost any fish yet and my tank is always clean.....so with all the "stuff", I must be doing it "ok"

Easy to use and clear instructions. Finding it a bit tricky to be accurate with the reading as the colour of the solution can look like it could match several of the colour blocks.

I’ve been using the API Nitrate Liquid Test Kit for a while now and it’s been rock solid. The instructions are clear, the bottles are easy to work with, and the color chart is straightforward to read under normal lighting. I appreciate that it’s a true liquid test and not strips, so the results feel much more reliable and consistent. The test has helped me stay on top of nitrate levels in my tanks and catch trends before they become problems. The reagents last a long time, and as long as you follow the directions and shake bottle #2 thoroughly like it says, the readings are repeatable. Overall, it’s accurate, dependable, and worth having if you care about water quality. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again.
