How tough is the glass? Will it withstand being knock about.

Yes, the glass seems tough enough. But the little compass was nor securely fixed on mine, and I have lost it. I came out when I was outside, and now I have a hole where it used to be. I have no idea if it can be replaced.

Can I set a count down timer on this?

I don't honestly know, it has the normal timer, but nit sure re count down sorry

Does the watch arrive turned on or do you have to press a few buttons?

As a digital watch, it is already active, that is turned on. But you may have to set the time, which I think was set for somewhere in America. But the instructions that come with it are pretty clear.
