When diagnosed with kidney failure we started feeding this to her. For other reasons she was limited in what she eat and this was perfect for her. They also have the same formula frozen. When she’d get tired of one we’d switch to the other. She lived over a year after diagnosis. She was a Shia Inu and made it to 16 1/2, very old for a Shiba. Only downside is the price, but it’s the same price here as everywhere else

I’ve been searching for a renal care food that my senior dog will eat. Sadly, this one is not it. And since it was so expensive, I wasted a lot of money on it. I will say to the other reviewers who have commented on the smell: that smell is simply cooked cauliflower. There isn’t anything wrong with the food, it’s just too expensive and my dog doesn’t like it.

i was NOT impressed ! The packaging is hard to cut up and re seal. Scooping out the food -- awkward. The food itself smelt OK, but it looked like it was mostly WHITE RICE and mashed up Lamb pate. For the expense, i was expecting cuts of meat and viable veggies. If my buddy with renal disease liked it and gobbled it up, i wouldn't care. But she was NOT A FAN. We struggled together. i had to add some chicken juice to make it more palatable for her. Last resort ? Maybe. Perhaps YOUR best pal will love it. Hard to figure.... But there MUST BE a more desirable renal support dog food out there...

Note, to measure and compare phosphorus, protein, Fat, etc, you have to use the measurement on a dry matter basis. Plug into several AI chatbots (not just one, cuz theyre frequently wrong) . 1. We tried all 3 big brand rx renal foods. And we tried for a long time. Even when he was soooo hungry he would not go near any of it. He lost 10% of his body weight. Ugh. Thats bad. 2. We dabbled in Forza10 wet renal food. He was into it for a bit, but its highee in protein and phosphorus on a dry matter basis than is most appropriate for a dog with stage 2 and beyond, kidney disease. Do not recommend this food. The dry version is actually less protein and phosphorus, but gotta make sure they get water intake!!! Then we found the JustFoodForDogs rx food at Petco brick and mortar. The assistant was wonderful enough to allow me to buy 1 package of the frozen without an rx to see if he liked it. He gobbled it up at 1st because hed been subjected to the typical rx canned, but then after a few days he was over it. But its still by far the best of the lot. Only issue is, he gets "over it" very quickly. So we swap it out for Dr harveys every so often. The issue is, Dr Harveys is not complete even after meat and oils, so I would prefer the big brands or this, but thats how it goes I want to mention, this food is very low in phosphorus on a dmb, low in protein but slightly high in fat. Im good with that!! Based on my dog's stage 2 diagnosis and the amount of protein in this food my vet said its appropriate to add 1/2 oz of boiled chicken per day. We also add 1 oz of broccoli (low protein, low phosphorus and no fat). Because this food is so low in phosphorus it means he can get that added meat! Thats great. And bc we add the 1/2 boiled lean meat a day, and the broccoli, its reduces the amount of fat to like 16% dmb. Perfect. 20% dmb fat for some dogs can cause issues. I am so darn thankful this food exists. Hopefully he stays with it, we're 3 weeks in. I will update. Oh, and just looking at it is so much more appealing than the canned foods. Oh yeah, super expensive, luckily my dog is only 10lbs. Here are the protein, fat and phosphorus percentages on a dmb for the affor mentioned renal foods: Royal Canin Renal Support E (Wet) * Protein (DMB): ~24% * Phosphorus (DMB): ~0.47% JustFoodForDogs Veterinary Diets * Frozen Rx Renal Support Low Protein (Wet): * Protein (DMB): 13.3-20% (DMB) * Phosphorus (DMB): 0.20-0.30% (DMB) * PantryFresh Renal Support Low Protein (Wet): * Protein (DMB): 12.5-18.75% (DMB) * Phosphorus (DMB): 0.25-0.31% (DMB) Forza10 Active Renal Support * Wet Food: * Protein (DMB): ~36.1% * Phosphorus (DMB): ~0.67% * Dry Food: * Protein (DMB): ~15.6% * Phosphorus (DMB): ~0.28% Note: The Forza10 wet food has a surprisingly high protein and phosphorus content on a dry matter basis, making the dry food a much better choice for a low-protein, low-phosphorus diet. To mention, consider putting your stage 2 dog on Thorne kidney support or similar supplements. Some have chitosan which is a phosphorus binder, but its not as strong as the ones for later stage diags.

This is a great product. At first my dog liked it but after a month or so, she did not want to eat it all. I will still keep the extras on the shelf for emergencies.

I had high hopes for this Prescription food with a 14yr old Chihuahua with Renal & Liver Disease. She liked the taste but after multiple tries of introducing it slowly over multiple days, once i got to 40% Just Food for Dogs mixed with Rice and her regular food, the Diarrhea came back. I am returning it sorry to say.
