do i need a phone socket for both / all phones or just main one ?

Yes there is an answerphone facility. A flashing red light on the phone denotes that a call has been received and that an answer has been left.

When a call is incoming, does this phone display the name of the caller stored in the phone, without subscribing to caller ID?

My Panasonic TGC220EB does show caller numbers but I am on BT and get Caller Display as part of the package. I suspect that if your provider subscription does not include Caller Display you will probably not get it.
