Hi, yes they are proper tools, but the saw isn't that great, nor are the screwdrivers, I replaced them with some of mine, but the kit overall isn't bad, a good way to get them started, my boy was 8 when I got it for him. Gary

what material the tools are in? Are they sharp bits and is it metal heads or plastic on the saw and screwdriver and hammer?

The tools in the Junior Tool Box are functional tools, all tool heads are metal. The saw will work on light woods like balsa, as will all other tools within the set. Due to the nature of the tools and the fact that they are sharp the product is not suitable for children under 8 years and should always be used with adult supervision.

My son is 13 and would love a carpentry set is this ok for him or is it only for young children. thanks!

This tool set is safe for toddlers, pretty much. More like toy tools. The best bit is the box.

The hammer measures 8 inches (20 cms). The set is suitable for a child of about 7-8 years. No older than that.
