So, how do you open it to empty it? The plastic bit covering the blades comes off but then what?

The whole top bit comes off (with the plastic lid and blades attached to it), you might just need to be a bit more forceful. There should be a little identation on the side, that you can "flick" the top off with. Sorry if this sounds complex, it just comes off easily on mine!

can you replace the blades

I really don’t know as I have had mine for a while now and use it daily and it’s still fine. (But I only use soft wood pencils). As for harder pencils, , I always use a good professional blade, not a plastic held one.

Can it be used to sharpen any type of pencil please

Yes of course, as long as they are a standard size and aren't too thick. It has two sharpeners, one that produces a shorter, stronger point and one that creates a longer, sharper one, It does work very well with Prismacolor pencils though, which some people report as being difficult to sharpen without breaking (not a problem that I have encountered).
