Flame King 1/4-lb Empty Refillable Propane Cylinder Tank - Reusable & Transportable - Safe and Legal Refill Option - UL1769 Listed Valve

My favorite propane tank I own. I have a lot of DOT legal, refillable, high quality propane tanks but I’ve never had one this tiny. The thing is absolutely cute as heck with a big grill lighting torch, or even a regular little pencil flame braising torch looks huge on top. It’s expensive but then again they aren’t selling a ton of these and they have high quality brass fittings and valves and it’s a high quality steel tank that’s gonna last for thousands of refills. What a little cutie this thing is i swear. Your buddies are gonna be like where the heck did you find this thing? “DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT CUZ.” 😂 Edit [allow me to explain the volume for folks who aren’t clear]: The capacity of this propane tank/bottle works exactly the same as for any other propane tank. The volume of the comtainer is not the actual usable volume. There are a few numbers to go over real quick and it will all be clear. For any tank, (1) there are 4 numbers. There is the total volume of the tank. That’s how the total volume of water it would take to fill the tank. (2) there is the amount of space you need to leave as vapor at the top of the liquid level (or “head”), which is 20%. (Propane expands and contracts A LOT compared to other fluids, approximately 17X as much as water expands and contracts.) (3) there is the amount of liquid that you never want to go below, or your minimum liquid level, which is also 20%. (4) you have the amount that is left over [from the initial 100% volume], after subtracting the 20% gas at the top to allow for expansion and also the 20% minimum liquid level that below which most normal appliances designed to operate at normal pressure will automatically shut off, which is 60% of total liquid volume. For a 20 pound tank, those numbers are: (1) Approximately 25 lbs or 5 gallons. (2) Approximately 5 lbs or 1 gallon. (3) Also approx 5 lbs or 1 gal. (4) 15 lb or 3 gallons Most people know that they only get a max of 20 lbs in a normal tank, which actually holds 5 gallons of water if filled with water. What many do NOT realize is that you only have 15 of these 20 lbs available as usable propane. The last 5 lbs is not available. Now, for the ¼ lb tank: The actual total volume of the tank is 3.85 oz. They say ¼ lb some places and they list the 3.85 oz number elsewhere. ¼ lb is rounded up. From there, you get a max fill level of 3.08 oz. (# 1 minus # 2.) Once you also subtract the last 20% you can not use, and the actual usable volume of the propane tank is 2.31 oz. So you will fill it the first time with 3.08 oz. If you empty it, it will be down to .77 oz. The next time you fill it, you will only fill it with 2.31 oz (plus or minus about .05 oz with each fill). Every other time you fill if after emptying will take 2.31 oz, plus or minus .05 oz. (That’s plus or minus about 1% to 1.25% total volume) So if reviewers say this is a ¼ lb bottle they are telling the truth—technically 3.85 oz is the correct number but they are def within spitting distance. If they say it only held 3 oz they are telling the truth. If they say they only get 2.3 oz of useable propane every cycle, they are telling the truth. It’s a funny thing. Hopefully this illuminates some of the haziness and confusion around this subject.

This is a good size bottle to use an adapter and pair with a backpacking stove. I used it for car camping to make cups of coffee. So far I have boiled 7 cups and still have about 10 grams left of propane. It is a little on the heavy side. About 300 grams for a full bottle. Add a BRS 3000 stove and the adapter and you’re looking at 358 grams. The BRS stove with a 100 gram isobutane canisters is 240 grams. Not a whole lot of extra weight, but you are getting more fuel with the 100 grams canisters. It would be nice to have a flatter “pancake” style 1/4lb as this can get top heavy. I’m 3D printing a base for stability. I love what Flame King is doing! The bottle holds about 50 grams, not a true 1/4lb FYI.

NGL, I bought these because they were cute. But I found out that they come in handy for odd things. I needed a propane torch for some copper pipe work in a confined space, and these worked great. Of course I can use a full size bottle and hose, but using small bottles is actually less clunky. I ran my 2000W generator from one of these just for biannual testing. And it worked for my Coleman stove. So, cute but works for a lot of low volume things.

I currently own 3 of these little guys which I frequently use with two types of propane tools. By far the type I use most is (obviously?) the propane torch. In any job requiring a torch I've found these to be the ONLY way to go. Using any propane/MAPP torch head with these in just about every situation I've come across is far superior and gets into spaces that are impossible for a full size bottle. Camping/backing single burner stove: Less frequently used but still an amazingly improved area for these bottles are butane/propane backpacking stoves. Using a propane adapter and this tank is just far more useful when cooking a meal on any sort of situation where these stoves are used. Whip this out on an overnight backpacking trip with a group and it WILL TURN HEADS although serious backpackers will never wish to carry the extra weight unless dealing with some serious cold, enough to FREEZE Butan... but I digress. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONS: - The brass valve for filling is EASILY stripped out rendering the bottle effectively useless as FlameKing steaks the threads after installation to prevent the complete removal of the valve screw for some reason. The screw CAN be removed since it is tapped/threaded in the relatively soft alloy Brass. No replacement 'fill/bleed' valves are available. FlameKing states "Unfortunately we don't carry this part for liability reasons. Apologies for any inconvenience!" even though these can indeed be replaced safely and fairly easily. -The O-ring inside the connection has failed on one of my bottles. I'm not sure how this can be replaced!

Easy to refill, works perfectly.

I've used Flame King's 1 lb refillable cylinders for many years and have never had one fail in spite of very high refill counts. My idea with this smaller bottle was to replace the butane torch I use to light my woodstove with a better, more easily refilled option. This little guy is perfect in that regard. Not much bigger than my butane torch. Easily filled with the kit I already have for the 1 lb bottles. I haven't had it long enough to comment on refill frequency needs, but that's entirely dependent on the torch and flame intensity anyway. 1/4 lb of propane is 5000 BTU no matter how you parse it out. The only thing that makes this a 4 instead of 5 star rating is the this thing is TINY! I had formed an erroneous idea it was a typical pop/beer bottle size but in fact it's much smaller! Not Flame King's fault but I thought it might be helpful to show it in perspective.

DO NOT BUY THIS TANK! This was a good tank for about 2 weeks. It started leaking. I reach out to flame king and they wanted me to spray the tank with soapy water and take pictures of where the bubbles are coming from to pinpoint where the leak is. I'll admit that I am busy and forgot about the email to customer service. I received an email saying that I had 48 hours to respond to them or they would close the customer service claim. I responded with the pictures of the leaks that day. Now the company refuses to reach back out to me to resolve the issue. The best thing is that it is now past the return window so I am stuck with a smelly leaking little tank. Do not buy this tank!

I wish I had bought two or three of the 1 pound version when it was available. These tanks are super convenient and durable. Great value for the money.

Perfect for my torch head instead of a bulky tank. Would be good for a mini propane camping lantern too.

I weighed each of the two bottles I received. They each weighed 8.9 oz. empty. After filling them with the Flame King filling adapter, they each weighed 11.1 oz. If my math is right this equates to 2.2 oz capacity, well below the advertised capacity of 3.85 oz. I tried several times but they wouldn't accept any more propane. Great for small jobs, but I would have liked to see more capacity in line with the advertised number.

Built quality is excellent. I have two of the 1lb Flame King. Wish this was a 1/2lb. 40oz of propane lasted less than 30sec on the hand held torch.
