Would one of these work on filtering a single family home or would you need to have a couple in tandem?

I would recommend the AP800 series for the whole house filtration depending where and quality of water supply. you really don"t want to filter garden or toilet water, thus it is recommend to extend life of hot water heater or Boiler separately and then point of use for drinking. Joe B.

5 micron filter works great for me. Replacement would be effected by how dirty the water is and volumn used. Lasts 3 months for me.

Is there a reusable stainless filter available for this?

No, there is not. All water filters need to be replaced at regular intervals on any passive system. A stainless filter would be a relatively course mesh and not filter well as compared to a replaceable filter where you can choose the level of filtration, 5 micron, 20 micron, etc.
