Do you have to flip the pillow to sleep in the other side?

Yes. You want to flip when you change sides. You should be able to have your head on the pillow, your shoulder in the curve of the pillow, between your knees & last depending on your height, can be between your feet. I have problems sleeping, but I've slept 75% better since I bought this pillow.

Has anyone tried both the original and the “cooling” version of this pillow? i’m a short hot sleeper, so don’t need the extra length.

I have the original pillow, and am a very warm (short) sleeper, at only 5 ft tall. It works beautifully for me, as I have osteoarthritis in the back. If I get warm, I kick off the covers. Hope this helps.
