The description says 40 ct., is that how many I am purchasing ?

It's 40 lozenges, about 20 per package. Taste is different from other other lozenges than I was used to, but I do like them now.

Do these contain an artificial sweetener?

Yes, Acesulfame K. I've never heard of it. I Googled it. It is FDA approved but I wouldn't want to have a lot of it. It also has sorbitol and Sucralose which are artificial sweeteners based on sugar.
