Does this machine sew stretch fabrics. Lycra)spandex?

According to the instruction book it does stretch fabrics. It does have a very nice stretch stitch. The machine is new to me. I tried it on a very stretchy piece of fabric and it worked well. I plan to use the stretch stitch to hem a pair of stretchy cargo pants. I love the machine. I had a Bernina for about 40 years and am very happy with their Bernette. However, if you plan to do a lot of embroidery, you may want the more expensive model. Hope this helps.

Does this machine sew through thick material like 4 to 6 layers of denim?

No. You need a sailmakers (see Sail-Rite machines) heavy duty machine for that. This one is for lightweight fabrics and household use.

Quilting? Does anyone use this machine?

I have made 3 quilts on this machine. The largest was full size. I use a 90/14 needle, adjust the tension to lower it just a bit, use the darning foot, and I use a meander stitch. It quilts through the cotton fabric, plus cotton batting, plus flannel on the back. It does this beautifully. I'm very pleased.

How does this machine handle thicker fabrics (home dec)?

Of all the options in this price range, this is probably NOT the one for thicker fabric work. I'd recommend the HD3000 Janome, as it was designed to handle heavier needle strokes and has a thicker needle-to-plate distance. If you want a home machine to do heavy stuff, get the Janome HD (The Singer HD's are weak in comparison, and often skip stitches under heavy load)
