Aromatic dark roast from the wilds of Michigan
I'll be honest, I get nervous when trying to review coffee for its flavor, it's almost as daunting as trying to review wine. So I'll start with the company. I was drawn to this quote on the website, so I will repeat it here: "We have funded growing over 28,000 coffee plants from seed in Guatemala so far and have plans to grow another 25,000 plants this year. These coffee plants are transplanted into model farms in Guatemala to produce coffee for years to come and for the areas coffee farmers to learn about more sustainable & profitable farming practices." This is not "Fair Trade" coffee or "Shade Grown" or "Rainforest Alliance" or Smithsonian "bird" friendly. But the heads of this company clearly have a vision about how they want to help coffee growers, and it is admirable. Packaged in a standard 12 oz vacuum sealed packaging like you'd get at Starbucks, with a goofy cartoon image on it, the beans themselves smell fantastic! Almost didn't want to grind them! Very fresh, dark-roasted Arabica beans. We tend to make fairly strong coffee, with one coffee drinker here then bombarding it with oat creamer or some other non-dairy option, and the other just using a touch of creamer (whatever's available). So we are used to and kind of a relish a slightly bitter tinge to our coffee... and this is a hard word to describe, because "bitter" can be seen as negative, and is in fact a negative descriptor for other varieties of coffee I've tried. But I mean it in a good way with this coffee. I'll use the dumb words I can think of: mellow, slightly bitter, rich. With a lovely aroma. This coffee is double the price of my standard "every day" coffee, but so are a ton of others. It's a decent price for a small company to get their product distributed nation-wide, and it's worth both trying the coffee, and supporting the Kalamazoo Coffee Co.

Fresh but not distinctive dark roast
This whole bean coffee (Papua New Guinea) from the Kalamazoo Coffee Company is definitely fresh and a nice roast, but not especially a distinct coffee that will have me repurchasing. I always make my coffee with a single cup pour over method, and appreciate high-quality whole beans. These beans arrived especially fresh, with visible oils on the surface of each bean and a very even roast. Fragrance was pretty standard for a dark roast coffee without much distinct aromas. After several cups of this coffee, I do not really find much that distinguishes it from other beans. It is a decently satisfying dark roast that is not particularly smoky, acidic, nutty, or chocolatey. It is a fine coffee, but not one that I would pick up over other roasts/blends that I find more compelling. It is worth a shot if you like dark roast coffees that are fairly inoffensive, and pretty fresh. Otherwise, I will be reaching for something with more notable flavor profiles.

Flavor is very dark roast; bold and a tad bitter
Kalamazoo Coffee Company Whole Bean Papua New Guinea, 12 oz. bag, Pack of 1 (Whole Bean Papua New Guinea) We aren’t huge fans of dark roast, but my husband does sometimes like it for his espresso. I found this coffee to be a tad too dark for me, too bold and a tad bitter really, when I used it in an automatic and pour over, but my husband did enjoy it for his espresso. I generally like the “lighter” flavors of coffee, so if you like the darker ones, this is for you. Recommend.

Kalamazoo Killer Beanz Papua New Guinea Whole Bean Coffee 12 oz
Killer Beanz is a created from coffee grown in Papua New Guinea in volcanic rich soil which creates a deliciously unique flavor. This 12 ounce pouch of whole bean coffee is a dark roast which is my preference. It has a bold coffee taste with a well-developed smoky element and a slightly bitter finish that adds complexity. Unadorned it has an excellent flavor but also holds up well with cream and sugar added. The aroma of the beans is excellent in the bag, while being ground (I used a burr grinder on a medium setting) and during brewing. Also the graphics on the bag are so distinctive they make this coffee immediately identifiable—no small task—and provides a laugh which is definitely a valuable commodity. To estimate shelf-life in August 2022 the Best By date is 11 months in the future but dates will vary. Very good coffee.
