I'm not sure what is on it or if any thing is at all. It is very smooth.

Has anyone placed this on top of a pot of boiling water to stop the water boiling over?

Yes. It does work, but it does get hot. Be careful when taking it off the pot.

Will this spoon work in a hot pan and not melt?

Yes, this is wooden spoon, it‘s work in a non-stick pan and not melt like silicone spoons. It will be your favorite cooking tools.

What are the different uses for the solid wooden spoon and the slotted spoon and which should I purchase?

I use this larger spoon for pasta dishes, stews, etc. It's very durable. Slotted spoon I would use when I am serving something that I don't want a lot of the liquid to be placed on the plate/bowl.
