Prayer Primer: Igniting A Fire Within

Practical and concrete advice on an abstract subject
This book is probably the best I've read on the subject of prayer. It inspires and guides. It helps to actually formulate a plan for deepening prayer and ways to measure the progress. It has an easy to read tone but isn't dumbed down. It is a great place for anyone to start if they are curious about what prayer is an how to do it. It is useful for beginners in prayer and for people who have been praying their entire lives but wish to grow deeper in their relationship with God.

Wonderful little book for learning to pray
This short little book is filled with so much wisdom. The text is easy to read and understandable for anyone interested in improving their prayer life. Although the author is a Catholic priest, I believe that this book would be useful for any Christian who is trying to draw closer to God. Father Dubay certainly gets to the heart of the matter in regards to our relationship with God and explains how every one of us can draw ever closer to God through prayer and meditation. The author also explains the different "levels" of prayer that we can aspire to and achieve and the means to obtain this spiritual closeness. As the title suggests, this is a book for "beginners" of prayer but it goes beyond vocal prayer and explains in simple terms meditation and contemplation. Father Dubay has a wonderful way of explaining theologically deep subjects without letting the reader get bogged down in heavy theological terminology. I highly recommend this book as well as "Fire Within."

Excellent starter for a prayerful life!
This is a valuable resource, especially for lay individuals who are only taught vocal prayers ( i.e., the ones you'd find in prayer books, devotions, etc.). While there is nothing wrong with vocal prayers, introducing meditative and even contemplative prayers truly enrich even the simplest of exultations on any given ordinary day. And this book does that, and it is my hope that anyone who reads this book will also have their eyes opened. The book describes prayer in a very meaningful way, highlights basic techniques, impediments/pitfalls, and even hints towards proper progression through the correct application of prayer.Recommend this book for Catholics looking to deepen their spiritual experiences through prayer.

Excellent Book
For those who want to have a closer relationship with God, this book is an excellent way to learn how to do so. It covers all the topics necessary to get one started with prayer, most especially contemplative, which provides the most benefit. Also touched upon is the use of the Liturgy of the Hours (Breviary). For those with smart phones or an iPad, an excellent app called iBreviary is available for free that contains all the different Liturgies. It is also available on the web as a companion to meditative and contemplative prayer. Very well written and answers many typical questions that arise. The book is written by a Roman Catholic priest, so focuses on Catholic Liturgy, but Protestants can also benefit from the prayer advice, even if they do not wish to consider the Liturgy of the Hours (which is based 100% on scripture, so also applicable to any Christian).

Everything you wanted to know about praying, and then some...
Everything you wanted to know about prayers, praying, and then some... A great "how to" book by acclaimed masters along with simple yet deep explanations, all in a simple little book. If you think your prayer is boring, you won't after you read this. It really "ignites the fire within."
