Packed with dramatic true stories from one of European historyโs most romantic and turbulent eras, this epic narrative chronicles the five Plantagenet queens of England between 1299 and 1409, from the New York Times bestselling author hailed as โthe finest historian of English monarchical succession writingโ ( The Boston Globe ). โA thorough and illuminating survey of the Plantagenet dynasty.โโ Publishers Weekly The Age of Chivalry was an era of the Middle Ages dominated by the social and moral code of knighthood that prized noble deeds and the game of courtly love between aristocratic men and women. A period of high drama in English history, the fourteenth century witnessed the toppling of two kings, the Hundred Years War, the Black Death, and the Peasantsโ Revolt. Feudalism was breaking down, resulting in social and political turmoil. Against this dramatic milieu, Alison Weir recounts the lives and reigns of five queen consorts: Marguerite of France was twenty when she married sixty-year-old King Edward I. Isabella of France , later known as โthe She Wolf,โ dethroned her husband, Edward II, and ruled England with her lover. In contrast, Philippa of Hainault was a popular queen to the deposed kingโs son Edward III. Anne of Bohemia was queen to Richard II, but she died young and childless. Isabella of Valois became Richardโs second wife when she was six years old, only to see him violently overthrown. This was a chaotic and brutal age, despite its chivalric color and ethos, and it stands as an arresting setting for the extraordinary stories of these queensโ lives. Donโt miss any of Alison Weirโs fascinating Englandโs Medieval Queens series: QUEENS OF THE CONQUEST โข QUEENS OF THE CRUSADES โข QUEENS OF THE AGE OF CHIVALRY โข QUEENS AT WAR Review: Queens of England - Alison Weird doesn't fail to educate along the path of writing an incredible history. The Queens trilogy sweeps through the centuries with an eye to queens and their impact in politics and family. Absolutely worth the read for all 3 books. Review: Always 5 stars - I cannot add to what so many have said. The writing is clear and enlightening. She remains a 5 Star author of English history. Bottom line is - buy her books and enjoy the journey.

Interesting Read . . .
I originally purchased thinking this was historical fiction. But it is really a history book. I wasn't sure if it was for me but enjoyed it very much! I couldn't wait to see what would happen to each queen. Lots of interesting insights into that period of time.

Excellent History
Actual Rating 4.5 The author excelled at incorporating details about all aspects of life that were honestly quite fascinating, helping to set the scene and provide meaningful context to the life of the queens discussed. These details included information about books found in a royal library, to fashion trends started by a queen, to apothecary orders and expenditures on jewelry. There were also verbatim correspondences included as well as letters that were summarized, which I loved (yay for primary resources!). Weir is excellent at inferring conclusions from available data and incorporating them into the book, but clearly stating that it isnโt fact, merely a possibility. I canโt praise this practice enough. This work did get somewhat dense in some places, but generally the author excelled at keeping the information approachable and interesting. I loved how well the broader historical context was incorporated around the lives of the queens as well, helping to create a well-rounded picture. There are instances when the book doesnโt focus on the queens as much as some readers may prefer, but thatโs likely due to a lack of available information, because women in history werenโt documented as thoroughly. Overall, readers interested in the history of Medieval England would greatly benefit from reading this. Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing for allowing me to read this work. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Fascinating v detailed history book.
This book is a fascinating description of the lives of four medieval queens including Isabella, wife of Richard 2nd who went to France and came back with her lover Mortimer and an army. This is not historic romantic fiction, itโs a serious history book. Only buy if youโre a serious history buff!
