What is the length of the message that can be displayed?

I am not sure the actual number of characters allowed for a message. We bought this for a campground to notify campers of events. We entered each event separately and selected which ones we wanted to display. At one point we had several messages tagged. They each ran one after the other. The directions are not really clear but once we played with it and figured it out it was great! The campers loved it!

Can it be placed on a timer to be powered on and off, and the unit restart its programming when power is turned on?
